1 :) ? Dead Man's Hill.  Hope I still get this?  It's actually an Indigo Girls song - was just a guess for this.  And my opponent is actually my refer-ee and I know he is from West LA so figured he might know this more due to the geography - we shall see!   And appreciate Ben's answer here :) D1

2 :( Malawi. Thought a decent guess based on the capital name  D3

3 :) Blue Dress. Figured this would be a pretty easy guess even for people who don't know the book, like me.   D2

5 :( Bay of Pigs. Knew Gulf of Tonkin - took a great class on Vietnam war in college - but was too deep in my brain, wouldn't have rememeberd it

6 :( Pittsburgh, which I thought would be right (seemed to go with Pistons, like steel). Alas.
