Dave M day 25 v David M LLL

A mediocre 3/6 to round out the season in mid-table C like usual. David S takes our matchup easily as I gave him 0 and 1 on the two he got wrong. How could he not know block and tackle?

1 : ) Block and Tackle. If I know this then presumably everyone does, right? Wrong. D00

2 : ( Eisenhower. Hazy about who passed in this period so wound up with the same wrong answer as David. Assumed he'd get it for sure. D21

3 : ( St Basil's Cathedral. Whoops, wrong city. D12

4 : ( Unity. I've seen these weird symbols in my husbands study material but never learnt which was which, so David S's supposition is correct. D33

5 : ) Rhubarb. Straightforward Q. D12

6 : ) Georgia. Happy to get this one, figured it would be one of the final of the original colonies to be settled. D21

See you all in August!

Jesse Day 25

2/6. I have flunked out of B due to an absurdly low defensive efficiency of .533. Have a great offseason. I might take the next season off due to travel.

1. A mechanical system whose name sounds like a pair of fundamentals in American football is commonly used on sailing ships for the lifting of heavy loads. What is that name?

Correct Answer: BLOCK AND TACKLE
Your Answer: Tackle Hoist
Points Assigned: 2

Shoot. Very guessable.

2. A series of interviews conducted from 1963 to 1965 resulted in the posthumous October 1965 publication of the autobiography of whom?
Correct Answer: MALCOLM X
Your Answer: Guevara
Points Assigned: 2

Shoot. Very guessable.

3. The collection of buildings that constitute Russia's State Hermitage Museum includes the Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, Hermitage Theatre, and—most prominently—what other building (which, incidentally, does not have "Hermitage" in its name)?
Correct Answer: WINTER PALACE
Your Answer: Winter palace
Points Assigned: 1

I was supposed to go to St Petersburg when I went on the Trans-Siberian railroad, but fate intervened.

4. The symbol known as the cap symbol, such as in the expression A ∩ B, is used in mathematics to represent the operation most often given what name?
Correct Answer: INTERSECTION
Your Answer: Subterfuge
Points Assigned: 1

I had no idea.

5. What perennial, despite (or perhaps because of) the tart flavor of its petioles, is a vegetable commonly used as a primary ingredient in sweet dessert pies—so much so that, in the US, it is nicknamed the "pie plant"?
Correct Answer: RHUBARB
Your Answer: Rhubarb
Points Assigned: 0

Guessed this one right.

6. In 1733, James Oglethorpe, with a charter from the current British king, brought the first group of about 120 settlers to what colony?
Correct Answer: GEORGIA
Your Answer: Ohio
Points Assigned: 3

This is familiar now that I see the answer.

Brian Day 25

And boom goes the dynamite.  6/6 to close out my best season, and a victory today will clinch promotion to A.  Enjoy the summer, everyone, and play some One Days!

1) Block and tackle  3/2  gimme.   I was sexist and gave my female opponents high D

2) Malcolm X  1/1  Who died between JFK and MLK/RFK?

3) Winter Palace 2/1  I got an answer wrong in the past saying Winter Palace instead of Hermitage, so I knew they were linked

4) Intersection 2/3  math gimme

5) rhubarb 0/0  tart dessert vegatable, there's no other answer

6) Georgia 1/2    I had no chance at this until I realized the 'current British king' seemed intentionally unnamed.

David S Day 25 vs. Dave M. (LLL)

4/6 to end the season when I’m on the cusp of relegation. I feel like this was by far my best chance for a six pack this season. Hopefully it’s still enough to beat Dave M in LLL and get and LL win to stay in B next season.

  1. Lift and ballast :(, D31. Such a great question and I totally blew it.
  2. Eisenhower :(, D22. Terrible miss. Didn’t occur to me at all. This will probably go down as a literature question, but in reality it’s a rare American history miss for me.
  3. Winter Palace :), D10. The key was realizing this is in St. Petersburg.
  4. Intersection :), D13. Gimme. Dave isn’t so great at math, so easy for me to give him 3 here.
  5. Rhubarb :), D01. Only vegetable I can’t stand, specifically because it’s too sweet.
  6. Georgia :), D22. Gimme for me. Possibly gettable if you can figure it out from the year or know the college named after him in that state.

Good offseason to all!

5/6

1. What animated TV series' cast includes J.K. Simmons as Omni-Man, Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson, and Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson/the title character?

Correct Answer: INVINCIBLE
Your Answer: Harvey Birdman
Points Assigned: 3

I knew what they were referring to, but I had never seen it so could not recall the title.

2. According to (likely false) legend, Apple engineer Dave Hyatt named a product in 2003 after a Beach Boys song, the first track on the band's 1962 debut album of the same name. What is the name of that Apple product?
Correct Answer: SAFARI
Your Answer: Safari
Points Assigned: 1

My first though was Pod or nano, but that didn't make sense. Then Safari came to mind and that fit well with Surfin Safari.

3. Following the Japanese civil war of 1467–77, the country's central authority was dissolved. The emperor and his military commander (shogun) held only nominal authority, and real power was held by feudal lords called what? The first such lord to attempt reunification was the mid-16th-century local ruler Oda Nobunaga, and these lords would subsequently become vassals of the shogun.
Correct Answer: DAIMYO
Your Answer: Daimo
Points Assigned: 2

I just watched Shogun on Hulu, so this was fresh on mind.  Otherwise I would not have gotten it.

4. In the English football (soccer) league system, the top division is the Premier League. What, perhaps counterintuitively, is the name of the second-highest division of the pyramid, to which three Premier League teams are relegated after each season?
Correct Answer: (EFL SKY BET) CHAMPIONSHIP
Your Answer: Championship
Points Assigned: 2

It was the only thing that came to mind. Kind of lucky guess.

5. What color, similar to vermilion or cinnabar, is central to a critically acclaimed 1850 novel that was one of the first books to be mass-produced in the United States?
Correct Answer: SCARLET
Your Answer: Scarlet
Points Assigned: 0

Feels like a gimmie.

6. The letter thorn (þ, also known as þorn) was in the alphabets of some historical Germanic languages, including Old Norse and Old English, but lives on today exclusively in the orthography of what modern language?
Correct Answer: ICELANDIC
Your Answer: Icelandic
Points Assigned: 1

I was in Iceland a few years ago and I thought I remembered seeing that letter.

Brian Day 24 vs Ben (LLL)

4/6 and a crushing disappointment of a question.  However, I broke 100 TCA and only need two more correct tomorrow to match my best season, and I'm just outside of the promotion zone.

1) Invincible  2/3  Terrific show.  I don't watch cartoons (I just read comic books), but I made an exception for this.  About as messed up and bloody as a cartoon can get.

2) Safari  1/2   Excellent question.  I made a list of Apple products,  circled Safari as a possibility, decided to come back to it.  Half an hour later driving my daughter to school I blurted out, "Surfin' Safari!" and she looked at me like I was crazy.    Defense is tough here; even if you don't know the song, Safari is the most logical answer.

3) Mr. Roboto  3/2  Shogun was my favorite show this year, and I still had no idea.  So I think this plays hard

4) Champions  0/0   I was so psyched to know this immediately and finally get a soccer question, and what the hell is Championship?!?  This is utter baloney, a completely tantalizingly misleading question. I'm sure my D0 will hurt me in LL, though I assume not with Ben

5) Scarlet  2/1  Knowing the colors makes this a gimme.  Unless you're Seif (sorry Dave).

6) Icelandic  1/1  Pretty sure the Althing is spelled with this letter.

David S Day 24

3/6 with a bad miss. I’ve had a good Qpct this season, but a terrible streak of losses had left me at serious risk of relegation. If it happens, it certainly won’t be the first time I’ve been relegated down from B.

  1. Gargoyle :(, D11. No idea. Never heard of this show.
  2. iPod :(, D20. Didn’t think there was anything other than iPod that fit that time.
  3. Daimyo :), D23. Satisfying get on what I think is a pretty tough question.
  4. Championship :), D01. Spent a lot of time deciding between this and “champions,” since I couldn’t quite remember the word form. Glad I got it.
  5. Red :(, D32. Total flub coupled with terrible defense. What was I thinking here?
  6. Icelandic :), D12. Gimme for me.

Marcus, what you mention is a Buckner loss (named after the Red Sox first baseman whose error I’ll let you Google if you don’t know it).

Marcus LL101 Match Day 24 -- Confirmation

4/6 again and hopefully my defence is less disastrous today.

Brian Day 23 vs Mirkin

On the previous hardest day of the season, i got 4 correct.  Not this time.  2/6   But I thought it was an easy day to defend Dave, and a difficult day to defend me.

1) deciduous 2/2  I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a word I assumed I learned at some point, but no, I've never heard of this

2) Wallenberg 2/0  Was between Raoul and Daj, convinced myself Daj wasn't Swedish

3) Earthly Delights 0/1   My only chance today is that I get assigned a 3 for my worst category, in what was a rare art gimme for me (perhaps because I've read all the Bosch detective novels). I even assigned a 0 though it's my LL opponent's worst category.

4) Creole 1/1  Knew I was wrong. I've heard of the Gullahs several times, and it never sticks in my head.

5) Sharon 1/2  No chance here.  I haven't watched much Parks, and forgot about the Tammy movie.

6) Folds 3/3  TikTok finally proves useful, my 11 year old has danced to this jiggle jiggle wiggle wiggle song.

Dave and I both whiffed on our zeros, but the 3 for art gives me the match 4(2)-3(2)

Jesse Day 23

3/6 A pretty hard day I think.

1. Flowering plants (angiosperms) are divided into two classes based on the number of seed leaves present. Those with one seed leaf have a name with the prefix "mono-", whereas those with two begin with "di-". What four-syllable word completes the names of these two classes?

Your Answer: Foliumnal
Points Assigned: 3

I don't remember ever hearing this word.

2. British artist Barbara Hepworth's sculpture Single Form, which is on public display in the United Nations Plaza in New York, was commissioned as a memorial to what man, a Swede and friend of Hepworth's who perished in a plane crash in September 1961?
Correct Answer: DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD
Your Answer: Hammerskold
Points Assigned: 1

I know this because I used to work near Dag Hammarskjold plaza in NYC. Otherwise I probably would not have been able to remember that name.

3. A famous artwork by the artist Hieronymus Bosch has, in the artist's native Dutch, a traditional title that ends with the word lusten ("lusts"). The painting is housed in Madrid's Museo del Prado, where the title ends with the word delicias. In English, the piece's common modern title ends with what two words?
Correct Answer: EARTHLY DELIGHTS
Your Answer: deadly sins
Points Assigned: 2

I have seen this painting in person, but could not remember the title. I also think I may have confused it with another of his paintings.

4. Ntozake Shange's 1982 novel Sassafrass, Cypress, & Indigo is a story of three sisters and the other members of their South Carolina family who belong to what ethnic group, which predominantly inhabits the state's Lowcountry and Sea Islands?

Your Answer: Indian
Points Assigned: 2

I am watching parks and rec with my daughter now so this is fresh on my mind.

6. According to a rap written by British American documentarian Louis Theroux in 2000, which went viral in 2022 (thanks in part to an appearance on Chicken Shop Date with Amelia Dimoldenberg), his "money don't jiggle jiggle, it" does what instead?
Correct Answer: FOLDS
Your Answer: Folds
Points Assigned: 1

I listened to this a few times.

Dave M day 23 v Brian LLL

Today was tough, I expected and received 2/6.

1 : ( Enstamenous. Now I see the answer it vaguely stirs high school biology memories but was never going to get it. D12

2 : ( Nobel. Getting this right would have required me to know the names of early UN Secretary Generals, not my strong suit. D22

3 : ( Heavenly Delights. I got near but whiffed the close. D33

4 : ) Gullah. I listened to a documentary on the Gullah once. D01

5 : ) Tammy. I watched several Parks and Rec episodes. D10

6 : ( Jingle Jingle. No idea. D21

3/6 today.

3/6

  1. Botanical :(, D22. Had no clue. I’ve never heard of this term. I expected to be wrong but at least to recognize the term when I saw it.
  2. Hammerschold :), D20. Didn’t know the spelling, but I figured out the reference.
  3. Forbidden Fruit :(, D31. I actually think I could have gotten this. It didn’t click.
  4. Gullah :), D02. Only reasonable guess. Another one I think will be very hard for non-Americans.
  5. Smith :(, D13. No idea. Never saw either show/movie.
  6. Folds :), D11. I had no idea, but this seemed like the logical guess. I’m thinking there will be plenty of people who get this despite having no idea.

Been in the dregs of d, and haven't been posting much, but facing seif in ll will do so today

2/6

1) peron d3/0
Wasn't sure, this or bust, but was sure seif knew

2) mamma mia d0/2

3) grand theft auto d1/3

4) magnify d2/2

5) no more tears d1/1

6) foot d2/1

Brian Day 22

A satisfying 5/6 when I thought I had only 3.   Not loving my defense given how easily you all knew Peron and Tears though.

1) Peron 3/2  Very surprised to get this. I had no idea, and could only think of Francisco Franco (who is still dead), Pinochet, and Peron.   It was easy to eliminate the first two but I didn't think Perot would be correct.  I give all the credit to a well-constructed question leading me down the right path.

2) Chess  2/3 Gimme for an 80s kid

3) Baldur's Gate 1/1  No idea, though I have heard of it. Outside of Rock Band, I haven't played a video game since Tetris.

4) Macro 1/1  I've accidentally pressed the Macro button on my phone camera often enough to know what it does

5) No More Tears  2/0  I was convinced I was mixing this up with the Ozzy Osbourne song, and was confident I'd be off by a word but couldn't come up with anything else.   Turns out they're the same.

6) Flat 0/2  Figured these were either round- or flatworms, and platy- looks like plate.

Jesse Day 22

4/6

1. Eduardo Lonardi, Pedro Eugenio Aramburu, Arturo Frondizi, José María Guido, Arturo Illia, Juan Carlos Onganía, Roberto Marcelo Levingston, Alejandro Agustín Lanusse, Héctor José Cámpora, Raúl Alberto Lastiri. What is that name?

Correct Answer: JUAN PERÓN
Your Answer: Peron
Points Assigned: 2

The names looked both Italian and Spanish, which means Argentina due to their high amount of Italian immigration.

2. The hit 1984 single "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head, written by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus with lyricist Tim Rice, was part of an album released to raise money for what subsequently produced musical (in which the song appeared)?

4. As opposed to prime, zoom, telephoto, and wide-angle, what word is used most often to refer to the type of lens designed specifically for focusing in extremely-close-up photography? Such lenses typically have a magnification ratio of at least 1:1, allowing for a large reproduction ratio.
Correct Answer: MACRO
Your Answer: Macro

I used it growing up and for my daughter.

6. The invertebrates of the taxonomic phylum Platyhelminthes are worms so named for their shape. Helminth is the Greek word for "worm" and platy- is the Greek for what?
Correct Answer: FLAT
Your Answer: Flat
Points Assigned: 1

Total guess based on a Platypuses' relatively flat beak.

Dave M day 22

Back from vacation, with a middling LL performance while away, which continues this morning  with a 3/6. Same 3 as David S for the same reasons. I was however confident that Miss Saigon was the answer to number 2.

David S Day 22

3/6 today.
1. Peron :), D22. Perhaps my favorite question of the season. I knew the dates Peron was kicked out of and brought back to office, so that made it a pretty clear albeit uncertain guess.
2. Mamma Mia :(, D33. No idea. I vaguely knew ABBA and Mamma Mia were connected, so this was the best guess I could come up with.
3. Halo :(, D11. Lol. No idea.
4. Scope :(, D22. I don't know much about photography.
5. No More Tears :), D00. I remember this well as a kid.

Brian Day 21

I don't even know what to say about today.  Just a plethora of mistakes. Flagrant fouls against good judgement.  3.5/6

1) Styrofoam  1/1  It couldn't possibly be this easy, could it?  No it couldn't. Should have just said Nerf. Bad defense

2) Garden  2/2  Okay, this one could be that easy.  Never read it but hard not to have heard of it.

3) Title IX  2/2   Also that easy. For Americans at least.  The reason Yale's wrestling team got shut down in the 90s, but otherwise terrific legislation.

4) Olive juice  1/1  Not a martini drinker, but I know what dirty means.  Does this pay?

5) Mexico 0/0  You'd think I'd know this.  I should, but I don't. I thought of Mexico, Spain and Australia, and somehow forgot Italy existed.   And yes I ignored that Mexico's new leader probably hasn't been sworn in yet.

6) Caroline 3/3  Okay, this I'm very happy about.  I thought of song titles perhaps named after the artist's children, came up empty, and then thought of JFK.  I think this will be the hardest today.  (Nope, you all got it.)

Jesse Day 21

4/6

1. Marianne Joan Elliott-Said, frontwoman of the punk rock band X-Ray Spex (and songwriter of the band's anthem "Oh Bondage Up Yours!"), when deciding on a stage name, consulted the Yellow Pages to find "a name of the time, something plastic" and settled on what material used for packing peanuts, disposable food containers, egg cartons, consumer-electronics packaging, and insulation panels?

Correct Answer: POLY STYRENE
Your Answer: Styrofoam
Points Assigned: 0

0/2 on Styrofoam. Should have not used my 0 pointer here. I have the worst defense in my rundle this season.

2. Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic work of children's literature from 1911 involves the protagonist Mary's discovery and restoration of a Secret what?
Correct Answer: GARDEN
Your Answer: Garden
Points Assigned: 2

Not so secret of a garden, is it? I have never read it, but knew the title.

3. Very satisfying 5/6 (4/6 if Thorsten is in a mean mood) given that these questions were really not up my alley.

1. Styrofoam :(, D22. No idea. Seemed like a good guess.
2. Garden :), D21. I read this as a kid.
3. Title 9 :), D00. Gimme for an American I think.
4. Olive brine :), D12. As some people here know, I don’t have much knowledge when it comes to mixed drinks, but this one I knew.
5. Italy :), D11. Gimme.
6. Caroline Kennedy :), D22. This better pay despite my including the Kennedy at the end! I had no idea and spent a long, long time thinking about American girls who could have possibly worked for this.

David S Addendum

Two losses to Brian in two days. Oof!

Brian Day 20 vs David S (LL)

4/6 on what i thought was a very difficult day, though I got lucky with my answers.  Probably the hardest of the season.

1) Bohemian Rhapsody 2/0  Never saw the movie but I knew it fit with LiveAid. I expect Dave to make up a soccer movie as his guess.  The only reason i didn't give Dave a 3 here is because there is a women's softball question

2) Concept  1/3   I had no idea but it seemed to fit; also considered performance art.

3)  University of Oklahoma  3/1   No confidence but it was the first team I thought of.  The College World Series scores were on the front page of ESPN.com for several days recently, I hoped it subliminally gave me the answer.   Backed it up with being pretty sure the softball hall of fame is in Oklahoma.

4) Seif Street 2/2  I know this as well as Marcus knew Mahomes

5) Caltech (California Institute of Technology) 0/2  This is something I should know off the top of my head, but I was not confident at all.  I think this will be Dave's only gimme today

6) ukelele   1/1    Hawaii = ukelele I never considered anything else.  Much harder question than I thought, wouldn't have gotten this in 100 guesses.  Regretting my defense.

Dave, congrats on another pop music/film question, but I take it  6(4)-2(2)

Jesse day 20

When an artist uses a [BLANK] form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair." Correct Answer: STEEL GUITAR

David S Day 20 vs. Brian (LL)

2/6 on a day I found super hard. I was lucky to get even 2. I have a rematch against Brian today, this time in LL. I feel as though my 2 is decent against him, as I also suspect he’ll find this hard.

  1. Bohemian Rhapsody :), D03. Hopefully this draws a 3. I watched this during COVID. If not for that I would have had absolutely zero chance.
  2. Scatter :(, D31. No idea at all.
  3. UCLA :(, D21. No idea at all again.
  4. Little England :(, D22. No idea at all for a third straight question.
  5. Caltech :), D10. Can’t go to MIT without knowing (and being jealous) about this. Also just decently well-known, I think.
  6. Ukulele :(, D12. Thought this had some chance. It’s harder than I realized. I didn’t even know that there was such a thing as a steel guitar.

Brian Day 19 vs Seif

5/6 vs Dave on a day I think he'll also go 5/6.  I'll defend him perfectly, will he be able to do the same?

1) statin 1/1  I think a pretty easy medical question

2) carry me home 2/2  Was on the tip of my tongue.  But I don't think Dave will use his 3 here

3) Bavaria 2/1   A lucky, semi-wild guess, in that I know Prussia is in the north, I think Alsace-Lorraine were returned to France, and Bavaria was the only other region I could name.

4) Herring 1/2  Pickled herring with onions in cream sauce was a Sunday morning staple growing up

5) Mahomes 0/0  Huge gimme for me, Pat was a terrific middle and long reliever for the Mets.  Dave's a big football fan.

6) On the Dance Floor  3/3  Dave's gotten some music and film questions this season, but no way does he get this one.  Randomly popped up on my YouTube feed a few months ago, which is usually full of reaction videos of college kids and rappers listening to classic rock for the first time.

Our perfect defense comes crashing to a halt!   Dave misses a sports question I zeroed, and he assigns me 3 for a kosher delicacy.  I take it down 8(5) - 6(4)

Jesse Day 19

5/6

1. The names of the medications sold under the brand names Lipitor, Mevacor, Zocor, Pravachol, and Crestor all have what suffix, which is also used as the name for this class of drugs used to treat high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease?

Correct Answer: STATIN
Your Answer: Statin
Points Assigned: 0

I have managed to stay off them so far.

2. Martin Luther King Jr.'s August 28, 1963, "I Have a Dream" speech begins with the line "I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation." It ends—as Dr. King states, "in the words of the old Negro spiritual"—with what three words?
Correct Answer: FREE AT LAST
Your Answer: Free at last
Points Assigned: 1

I was able to recall this.

3. The nation of Germany is divided into 16 states (Länder), three of which are smaller Stadtstaaten ("city-states") while the remainder are Flächenländer ("area states"). Of the 16, which Flächenländ is both the southernmost and the largest in area?
Correct Answer: BAVARIA/BAYERN
Your Answer: Bavaria
Points Assigned: 1

I have been to Bavaria and know it is large and at the bottom of Germany.

4. Once (and perhaps again?) a common breakfast dish in Britain, kippers are made with what fish, which are split, gutted, and cold-smoked?
Correct Answer: HERRING
Your Answer: Herring

I considered Sardines, but those are more southern European.

Correct Answer: PAT MAHOMES
Your Answer: Maholmes
Points Assigned: 2

I figured it would not be baseball and then rattled off the top players in the major sports.  I thought I recalled Mahomes was the son of a professional athlete.

Correct Answer: ON THE DANCEFLOOR
Your Answer: London
Points Assigned: 3

Nope.

Dave M day 19 v Marcus LLL

Just like Marcus, 5 gimmes and an impossible baseball question. And we both D3ed each other on that baseball question for a tie.

My LL opponent has forfeited all 18 days so far so I'm optimistic for a win there!

I'm on vacation next few days so will probably not post until later next week.
