Gideon Day 25 LL76

Hey all, good season.  A rough start but a strong finish for me.
I'd be psyched to play in a private rundle!

6/6 today

1 :) D1 Dragnet - I've seen so many parodies of this:  Mathnet, Police Squad/Naked Gun, that one episode of Woody Woodpecker.
2 :) D2 Cheops - I associate the name Cheops with Giza.
3 :) D0 Illinois - I got it from Wabash and Kankakee.
4 :) D2 Worms
5 :) D3 Bundt Pan - Over-defended this one, I think.
6 :) D1 Parabola

private rundle

I am in - Steiny

Will Day 25

The humiliation of finishing last in my rundle is too much to bear. This game takes an emotional toll on my fragile ego but I can’t wait for the next season!

1. Weak category for me but I knew this
Your Answer: Dragnet

2.
I thought I’d earned my history cheops, but I guess not
Your Answer: Ptolomy

3.
I was pretty close, I’ve heard of Wabash
Your Answer: Ohio

4.
No idea
Your Answer: orchids

5.
How I knew this is beyond me. Perhaps it was in that delicious mango chicken recipe Steiny emailed to the blog?
Your Answer: bunt pan

6.
I assume that I get this which would be my first math win ever!
Your Answer: parabolic

Brian I Day 25

4/6 on the last day of a fun season.  Happy to improve from 82 to 90 correct answers, putting me over .500 lifetime, but my DE took a nosedive to the bottom, costing me more than a few wins.  Pretty sure I'll stay in C, I'd need a loss and victories by the two players just below me to get relegated.

Would love to do the private rundle, count me in!

1) Dragnet.  I wasn't confident, this was a pleasant surprise. D2

2)Ramses.  Chag sameach to those who celebrate!  D1

3) Ohio.  I had no chance.   D1

4) Worms.  Gimme, I just know this for some reason. D3

5) Bundt.  I hope I don't need to include pan, otherwise a gimme. D0

6) Parabola.  Super duper math gimme. Not my favorite conic section, but it's close. D2

And now... play ball! Let's Go Mets! Let's Go Mets!

brad day 25

3/6 ... new best tca, hopefully none of you joining me in e next season

1) law and order d3
nope

2) ramses d2
hoping this was the sneaky way to get in a passover q

3) illinois d1
wabash was the giveaway for me

4)spiders d2
no idea

5) bundt d0
my big fat greek wedding

6) parabola d1
math gimme

Sharon wrapup.

Been AWOL due to travel, which cost me a win (answering late at night,
I wrote "Santo Domingo" instead of the country name, after thinking to
myself all day that I should avoid that mistake.) Also notable: after
trying to think of "fortnite" and instead putting "limelight"
half-a-season ago, I totally blanked on Fortnight. Now that it's been
an answer I will try hard to forget it as useless (things come around,
but this is likely not significant enough to).

Today: Passover clouded my ability to think about Egyptian rulers, I
stupidly didn't read "Eastern" in the geography question (would have
gotten it, even), and wrote "earthworms" instead of "worms" because I
didn't take the time to think about King Phillip Coming Over From
Great Spain and how soon in that sentence we hear the word Phillip.
Oops. 3/6.

Overall I was in C for a long time and had this theory that B and C
are pretty similar but very narrow relegation/promotion zones keep
them separate more than anything real. And while I had a pretty
strong season I pretty much proved my theory right my first season in
B. Still think A is crazyville and while I bounced up and down near
the edge of promotion in B, kind of happy to stay in B for next
season.

Dave M day 25 v Steiny

My terrible season crashes to an end with a dismal 1/6 against Steiny. He goes up, I go down for the match and for next season.

Ben, Will, I will upgrade for the private rundle – just let me know the details when they’re ready! And I’ll see you in E next season Ben…

1 : ( The only similar show I knew that had this text was Fargo.

2 : ( Went with Ramesses like everyone else.

3 : ) Clark County was the pointer for me too.

4 : ( Guessed Lizards.

5 : ( I thought of kitchenware brands rather than the pan shape itself. Guessed Tefal.

6 : ( Brain fart of the day. Went logarithmic.

Ben day 25

4/6 today, enough for my 2nd best haul of correct answers ever, 76, but likely insufficient to haul myself out of E after 3 consecutive losses, the last thanks to my opponent who had gotten 1 current events question right in the last 2 seasons getting fire and fury to beat me on defense.

Still, pleased with my sneaking in over 50% correct.

So next season, I think Will might set up a private rundle, which means we can all play against each other in a separate league in addition to the normal league play. To participate you need to be premier member or higher.   hope to see you all there! You can prorate a membership upgrade if you want based on how far through. Regular membership you are. Will be fun to play against you all every day.

1 :) dragnet. Just knew this. Not sure I ever watched it. I did see the parody mathnet on 321 contact as a kid.
2 :( ozymandius. I felt so good about my answer
3 :( Ohio. Should have gotten this from wabash.
4 :) worms. My daughter asked me about whether worms are insects Andy I looked this up just last week
5 :) bundt pan. Don't have to have spent much time in a kitchen to know this.
6 :) parabola. Math on md25 again!

Jesse day 25

2/6

1. "The story you are about to see is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent." This quote has often been reused and parodied, but it (or variations of it) was used first, and most famously, on what police procedural drama series?

Correct Answer: DRAGNET
Your Answer: Law and Order
Points Assigned: 1

Nope. Seems very gettable.

2. The Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest and largest of the six pyramids in the Giza complex, is generally believed to have been commissioned by Khufu, a ruler during the Fourth Dynasty in the 26th century BCE. Khufu was known to the Greeks, and is still widely referred to in the west, by what other name?
Correct Answer: CHEOPS
Your Answer: Rhamses
Points Assigned: 3

Nope, Seem very gettable.

3. Vermilion, Iroquois, Kankakee, Clark, and Wabash are among the counties that run along the eastern boundary of what U.S. state?
Correct Answer: ILLINOIS
Your Answer: New York
Points Assigned: 2

When I think of the Iroquois, I think of New York, but I was very confident in my answer.

4. The majority of the thousands of living species in the phylum known as the Annelids are commonly referred to as what?
Correct Answer: WORMS
Your Answer: Spiders
Points Assigned: 2

Oh, yeah. Once again, very gettable.

5. The bakeware pictured here has what name, which was trademarked by the Nordic Ware company of Minnesota in 1950? LINK: http://www.learnedleague.com/images/art/4876jg985jf784jg.png
Correct Answer: BUNDT PAN
Your Answer: Bundt
Points Assigned: 0

I think he will allow just Bundt.

6. The graph of the function y = x^2 forms what type of curve, first defined by ancient Greek mathematician Apollonius of Perga?
Correct Answer: PARABOLA
Your Answer: Parabola
Points Assigned: 1

I got a math question right! A total guess. If my opponent looks at my math percentage this should be worth 3 points.

Steiny Day 25 - Showdown with Mirkin

This is my only shot to be promoted...need a win and some losses above me.

1. :) It's like Thorsten says "just the facts ma'am" I have seen this show many times (and the movie/s) Thought it might be too old American culture for MIrkin so D3

2. :( No chance here, I guessed Ramses...D2

3. :) Fairly wild guess that was correct.  Illinois was my immediate thought so I must have some subconcious connection. D1

4. :( Guessed beetles...D2

5. :) Gimme of the day D0

6. :) Fairly straightforward math question that I didn't know to be true, but no other answer was as good as parabola in terms of type of curce D1

David S Day 25

5/6, and the one I missed was the history question. Even though missing a history question especially grates on me, it should help my point total. I'm not mathematically safe from relegation, but I think this makes it exceedingly unlikely.

1. Dragnet :), D2. I used the watch the PBS Square One parody of this religiously when I was young. I've never seen Dragnet but I remember being told Square One was a parody of it.

2. Ramses :(, D3. I knew this was wrong and that all the "household name" Pharoes were  wrong. Hopefully the D3 holds up.

3. Illinois :), D1. Clark County is the giveaway.

4. Worms :), D2. Was pretty sure this was right. Not really sure where I picked this up.

5. Bunt Pan :), D0. Per LL's "sounds like" rule, this should be correct. No great insight here. I knew what a bundt cake was and just went from there.

6. Parabola :), D1. Gimme.

It's been a pleasure, all. Until next season!

Gideon Day 24

Almost done. Have a good last match day tomorrow!

3/6 today

1 :( D3 Madras
2 :) D1 Cantalope
3 :) D0 Fire and Fury
4 :( D2 Calves
5 :( D2 Stratego
6 :) D1 The Ladies Man

Brian I Day 24

3/6.  Not quite clear of relegation.  Will, is that you I'm facing tomorrow to close the season?  It'll be a battle for highest CAA.

1) Punjab.  Knew this was wrong, but it's the only state I know. I'm not good at geography. Didn't realize what a gimme this was for everyone else, D3 could hurt.

2) Pineapple. guess, i had no idea. D2

3) Fire and fury.  gimme. D0

4) Hamstrings. Biceps femoris came up in the Suzanne Somers Thighmaster question in the Gen X mini-league.  Since biceps contract, figured to be the hammys.  D1

5) Parcheesi. no idea. Have been playing Trouble with my daughter, which has dice, so never considered Sorry. D2

6) The Ladies Man.  Tim Meadows voice as this SNL character cracks me up.  D1

Dave M day 24

Heading for a poor conclusion do a disastrous season and ought to end up at the very bottom of rundle D – so may pass Carr swapping between rundles for next season. Another loss yesterday and just 2/6 today on the questions I’ll certainly get a D1 and D0 against.

1 : ) Geography gimme. D1

2 : ( No idea – guessed Strawberry. D1

3 : ) Seems like a current events gimme. D0

4 : ( Went with Gluteals based on Femur location. Close but no cigar. D2

5 : ( No Ben I have also never heard of the correct answer as a board game. Sounded like a military game to me so guessed Army. D2

6 : ( Guessed the Manchurian Candidate – not sure I ever heard about the Ladies Man. D2

Jesse Day 24

4/6 again

1. Panaji is the capital of what Indian state, a center of international tourism and former Portuguese territory that is both India's smallest state and its wealthiest (by per capita GDP)?
Correct Answer: GOA
Your Answer: Goa
Points Assigned: 1

I haven't been, but my non-profit ran a trip there for teachers last summer.

2. On Herbie Hancock's landmark 1964 LP Empyrean Isles is a track called "Oliloqui Valley," but no such valley appears on any map. Likewise, another track on the album refers to a non-existent island named after what fruit?
Correct Answer: CANTALOUPE
Your Answer: Canteloupe
Points Assigned: 3

I have this album.

3. Facing the growing nuclear threat from North Korea, President Trump stated in August 2017 that "They will be met with ________ like the world has never seen." What three words fill in the blank, which are also the title of a book published in January 2018?
Correct Answer: FIRE AND FURY
Your Answer: Fire and Fury
Points Assigned: 0

I love Fred Armison's impression of Wolff on SNL.

4. Collectively, the semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris muscles are commonly referred to as what plural noun?
Correct Answer: HAMSTRINGS
Your Answer: Triceps
Points Assigned: 2

Nope! Considering I pulled mine a few times, I possibly could have known this.

5. The card pictured here was printed for use in what game? LINK: http://www.learnedleague.com/images/art/9786jghu48jt58t8.jpg
Correct Answer: SORRY!
Your Answer: Trouble
Points Assigned: 2

I got the two games confused. Was close.

6. Jerry Lewis and Tim Meadows both portrayed the lead characters in films—from 1961 and 2000, respectively—that, though very different in plot and style (and reception), shared what title?
Correct Answer: THE LADIES MAN
Your Answer: The Lady's Man
Points Assigned: 1

The only Tim Meadows movie I could think of.

Ben day 24

3 yesterday was not enough to get me over the line against one of our rundle's cellar dwellers. Let's hope it gets me there today or else my people's yearning to return to my D homeland will be denied.

1 :) goa. D3 based on my opponents history record
2 :( pineapple. I wonder if cantaloupe was more exotic back in those days.  Now it isn't just wooden filler on fruit platters, preferable only to the leper of fruits, the honeydew
3 :) fire and fury. Wasn't 100% sure I remembered this right, but those words are pretty hard to forget
4 :) hamstrings. I often use hamstring in the singular so the plural part totally confused me, and tempted me into writing quadriceps given they are also close to femur. Decided that wasn't plural either and felt like we were looking for a less scientific term.
5 :( parcheesi. It will be a cruel turn of fate if I miss promotion after missing a board game question. I've simply nevertheless played it. Not sure if it is as ubiquitous outside of US. Mirkin? I figured it was decades old based on font and language, and that everyone controlled several pieces, but didn't know sorry fit the bill. I had always assumed it was die based.
6 :( nutty professor. Gonna rack up some MCWs today I think. I have no idea who Tim meadows is and thought NP was Eddie Murphy, but didn't have another guess.

David S Day 24

4/6, which I'm pretty happy about. No chance at others. I'm currently in the lowest non-relegation spot in the rundle, so hoping this moves me up.

1. Goa :), D1. This would have been a gimme for me even with much of the clue cut out, but I'm not sure it will be all that easy. But I gave it a D1 since my opponent is strong in geography.

2. Passion fruit :(, D3. Not even close.

3. Fire and fury :), D0. Even by Trump's standards, this one is memorable.

4. Hamstrings :), D2. This took me a long time to get to, though I bet most people will find it much easier. D2 because my opponent is quite weak in science.

5. Sorry :), D1. I played this approximately 10 million times as a kid. It came to me immediately.

6. Almost Famous :(, D2. Nope!

Gideon Day 23

5/6 today

1 :) D3 Fortnight - I've seen some memes that referenced it.
2 :) D2 Eames - Charles and Ray are awesome!
3 :) D1 Ottoman Empire
4 :) D0 Prefecture
5 :( D1 Samantha Fox - I could kinda remember "wishing well" but kept getting the tune mixed up with "I feel for you." I've heard of Terence Trent, but I wasn't going to remember him. Now that I've heard it again (just now), I totally remember "sign your name."
6 :) D2 Polyester

Brad day23

2/6 and had no real shot at the others

1) call of duty d2

2) smith d1

3) ottoman empire d0

4) sasuke d3
dont feel good about the d3 now, hoping for some random japanese word

5) carlos santana d2

6) polyester d1

Will Day 23

I’m not sure mathematically that I can stay in my Rundle any more. If only my math skills were higher…

1.
No idea
Your Answer: Myst

2.
Pretty easy if you know it
Your Answer: Eames

3.
Pretty easy
Your Answer: Ottoman Empire

4.
Pretty easy
Your Answer: prefecture

5.
No idea. I’ve still never heard of that guy
Your Answer: Paula Abdul

6.
By definition it is widely known but almost went with nylon
Your Answer: polyester

Brian I day 23

Eked out a 7(4)-6(4) win yesterday, otherwise I'd feel a lot worse about today's 3/6 chokefest.

1)Call of Duty.  I think Fortnite came up on this blog on the last video game question,  and it didn't come to my mind for this question.  I hope at least a few of you got it.  D2

2) Earnes.  So close. Kicking myself.  Mis-remembered the name. My parents have had that exact chair and ottoman since I was a kid, I remember my mother being upset when the ottoman's finish got scratched because it was a classic.  D3

3) Ottoman Empire.  Not quite a gimme,  but this Ottoman (not the Earnes or Eames ottomans) fit the bill.

4) Prefecture.  Nice to call upon my comic book knowledge for a completely random question.  I definitely learned this in an issue of X-Men when they went to Japan for Wolverine's wedding. D2

5) Terence Trent D'Arby.  Wishing Well is a very annoying song, I'm glad it's finally good for something. If only every day had an 80s music question.  D1

6) Nylon.  Head smack.  What a choke.  Dacron sounds like nylon, what an easy question! Then I thought, wait, Dacron is in We Didn't Start the Fire, probably in the 1950s stanza, nylon is certainly older than that.  Ah, who cares?  Hits enter. D0 because it's oh so easy.

Jesse Day 23

4/6

1. According to an announcement by its publisher, Epic Games, in October 2017, the standalone free-to-play "battle royale" version of what hit survival video game tallied 10 million players in its first two weeks?

Correct Answer: FORTNITE
Your Answer: Fortnite
Points Assigned: 1

Griffin and Justin McElroy have a weekly YouTube series called Awful Squad where they play PUBG. They have spoken about Fortnite and I have heard it is the big things with teens right now.

2. What was the last name of the husband-and-wife team who designed these items? LINK: http://www.learnedleague.com/images/art/8y56v5098n6v04956.jpg
Correct Answer: EAMES
Your Answer: Brauer
Points Assigned: 3

Heard of them, but no way I would pull that.

3. The "Eastern Question," a diplomatic issue that arose in the late 18th century and was ultimately settled after World War I, revolved around the economic and political instability—and seemingly imminent disintegration—of what fading world power?
Correct Answer: OTTOMAN EMPIRE
Your Answer: Ottoman Empire
Points Assigned: 0

Gimmie-ish

4. Kanagawa, Aichi, Saitama, Chiba, and Fukuoka are among the 47 administrative subdivisions of Japan that are known by what term, roughly equivalent to a U.S. state or Canadian province?
Correct Answer: PREFECTURE
Your Answer: Prefecture
Points Assigned: 2

Also pretty easy.

5. What was the stage name of the artist, now known as Sananda Maitreya, whose audacious, self-referentially titled debut album from 1987 included the singles "If You Let Me Stay," "Wishing Well," and "Sign Your Name"?
Correct Answer: TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY
Your Answer: Milli
Points Assigned: 2

Nope!

6. Terylene and Dacron are trade names for the world's most widely produced synthetic fiber, which, with regard to textiles, is best known by what common name?
Correct Answer: POLYESTER
Your Answer: Polyester
Points Assigned: 1

Considered Rayon, but went with Polyester.

Ben day 23

I was always getting 3 right today, but defense had me baffled. My opponent is under .200 in both world history and geography, and i thought those were the 2 easiest questions. D2ed them both.

1 :( wot? I guessed agar.io d3. Only easy defense of my day
2 :( wot? I guessed Mondrian. D1
3 :) ottomans. D2
4 :) prefecture. D2
5 :( wot? I guessed santana. D0
6 :) polyester. D1

David S Day 23

3/6 against fellow Carr-ite KayM. No real chance at the three I didn't get.

1. Minecraft :(, D2. Vaguely have heard of Fortnite, but I don't think I had any chance of coming up with it.

2. Wright :(, D3. Basically the same situation  as question 1.

3. Ottoman Empire :), D0. Gimme for me. Not sure how easy this is, but KayM gets nearly as many world history questions as I do, so I don't think it will be a problem.

4. Prefecture :), D1. I've heard this term many times.

5. Jackson :(, D2. Nope!

6. Polyester :), D1. No great insight here. Seemed to me like the most common fabric besides cotton, which is not synthetic.
