Ok, ok. I concede that clearly "jump the shark" is, in fact, "common" judging by everyone else on this blog so far. But in no way, shape, or form can I ever recall hearing it (even though it appears I have), nor did I have any idea what it meant. 

This is why I no longer use my own judgement when assigning defense. Going with the method I use (before knowing what is and isn't correct) appears to be superior to using my own judgment even after seeing what's right.

Had to be North Africa, given the Arabic and Carthage Hannibal stops.  Now where exactly was Carthage?  Eliminated Libya, La Goulette is French, not Italian.  Algeria was colonized by the French, was Tunisia?  I think Tunisia sticks out close to Italy.  And Star Wars was filmed there. Is Thorsten connecting this question with question 5?  That's as good a reason as any to go with Tunis.  And so, Ben, that was the giveaway.   2/0

Weird day for me. I got 2 questions unexpectedly right and 2 unexpectedly wrong today.

1 :( Algiers. D23. Not sure how to choose between Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli here. What was the giveaway? I knew Algiers has a metro system and don't think the others do, but I did suppose they all had some sort of trains.  French led me away from Tripoli but population size led me towards Algiers. I thought Carthage was basically all over that part of North Africa which might be my undoing. Disappointed to miss.

2 :) jump the shark. D21. Seif, you have heard the term but you just filter out such trivialities. I think Andy used the term at trivia on Tuesday night. I'm not sure if he knew it's origin though.

3 :( Chagall. Did I confuse Chagall and Gauguin, or did they both dig the Polynesian ladies. D10.

4 :) mascara. D12. I didn't think the answer could possibly be so easy so I raised my D. I figured it was a subtype.

5/6.  First time submitting before I get to work, thunderstorm had me awake to see the questions as they went live.  Questions today seemed to be more life experience oriented, so defense was mostly guesswork.

1)Howard Johnson's.  Doesn't really look like Hojo's, but paint the roof, what else could it be? Should have given this more thought. 2/2

2) Chess. I know there's a Chess Records. Didn't what artists they're known for, but didn't see a point in thinking on it further. 1/1

4) singularity.  Science, science fiction, and complex analysis math gimme. I'm my 20 person rundle we now restart the rematches. I'm 6 points clear of 4th but I think I've been in this situation before and always seem to get overtaken in the last few rounds. Hopefully no choke this time. 3/6. I'm on a PB 8 match win streak in regular LL but I think today is probably my undoing against a .491 opponent who is strong in film.

​My first 9(6), I'm very excited and will gloat tonight at bar trivia with my fellow Yalie.  Was only confident of three of them, but felt pretty good about the other three, and I didn't have any hard decisions to make with defense.

2) Navarrone.  Had to stew on this for awhile.  I had Seven Against Thebes and Jason and the Argonauts stuck in my head.  Then thought this might be a convoluted question in which the commandos are not the main plot line, as in the recent Rocky III question , so I was thinking of movies I haven't seen which could possibly have this as a side plot, like Dr. No and Dr. Strangelove.    Then thought of Themyscira from Wonder Woman. Then went back to WWII movies like The Longest Day and The Great Escape, and Lee Marvin came to mind, leading me to The Guns of Navarrone (sic).  Never saw it, but I figured that had to be it.  (hmmm, looking now at Lee Marvin's imdb page, he was in none of the movies I mentioned. )   Overall, seems like a tough one for our age group.  3/3

3) Sheeran.  Gimme.  You cannot avoid The Shape of You if you're in the car with your wife and kids.  Clearly a zero for Andy, who listens to Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift without his wife and kids.   1/0

4) Geranium.  Knew this without the pic, I know there's an element that looks like geranium at first glance. 2/2

5) Copenhagen.  I don't know exactly where they are, but my only options were Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo and Copenhagen.  I figured why ask the question if it's Stockholm, and crossing bridges into Denmark would make an 18 mile trip take 45 minutes. 

6) Street Fighter.  The question seemed to be describing one of the fighting games that came out after I stopped playing video games with Arkanoid. Mortal Kombat was on my brain because of a jerkwad former LLama.  But luckily, in my channel flipping last night, I saw Kristin Kreuk on my screen, and had to stop and watch a minute of Street Fighter 2: The Legend of Chun-Li. I don't think I've ever been more frustrated with a 5/6 in my life. I would bet that my LL opponent got a 6/6.  

1) :) - When Thorsten asks questions like this, I worry that he's running out of material (this concern rarely lasts long). Not so much b/c it's a gimme, I'm fine with that. It's just that Shoguns and the Shogunate have been referred to in so many past LL questions. I think this is the second time a question like this came up this season. Maybe i'm just becoming an old crotchety LL veteran. I'll stop complaining now. D10

2) :) - Pretty tough movie question but easy if you've seen the film. D13

6/6. It must have been about 2 years since my last. I checked he questions around 330 and couldn't really get back to sleep, possibly due to the excitement. In my sleepy haze I thought I was playing Seif in the regular league which made no sense because he's in a different rundle. I wasted a bunch of time thinking through defense against him. In reality I was playing against my Australian cousin in e and steiny in lll. I've never beaten steiny in 6 matches on the big stage so it seems a shame to potentially do it in a lll friendly.

2 :) Navarone. D23. I saw this movie when I was a teenager. No idea that navarone was meant to be in Greece but it fit the clue otherwise. Would have been d3 for Seif. Most likely steiny miss I think.

4 :) D12. germanium must have been the 50th element I thought of and as soon as I did geranium was obvious. I had initially been trying to think of flowers ending in ium but had no joy on hat avenue of attack.

5 :) Copenhagen. D20. This was the one I was shaky about. Disappointing that I didn't know this cold given all the board games I've played with European maps. I thought it was Copenhagen but couldn't rule out Helsinki or Oslo with my knowledge. Looking at a map now they make no sense but when a 6 pack was riding on it, it was very stressful. Steinbergs like to vacation in Europe so they can train rather than drive to reduce the chance of their carsick daughters barfing in the car so he most likely knows this.
