Dave M day 5

Another good day with another 4/6 to get my season stats out of their current dismal state.

1 :) That is Cherie Blair so it could only be my man Tony. D1

2 :) I know Cassoulet has white beans in it and it sounded like it could be a pot. D0 as opponent strongest in food/drink

3 :( This was a random guess of one of the 43 states that don’t contain the large versions of these cities. In hindsight I’ve heard of Albany GA before. I went with Kansas. D2

4 :) I was thinking something along the lines of the boxer rebellion (which was in China) but couldn’t think of anything so just went with samurai on the assumption that they were involved. D2

5 :( I went with Lutyens. This must be nearly impossible to get. D3

6 :) I remember getting to play with a Newton back in 1994. D1

Steiny Day 5

Glad to see everyone posting to the new blog worked!  And this blog is not blocked at my work so bully for me!

Not a great day today

1. :( was so sure it was going to be boris johnson

2. :( Heard of it but never would have gotten it, I said stew

3. :) Heard of ALbany GA and went with it

4. :( Guessed NInja, but samurai makes a lot more sense

5. :( Guessed rembrandt assuming it was wrong

6. :( Guessed palm pilot

Jesse Day 5

2/6 and I'm 2 W and 2 L going into today.

1. What Briton's oddly and awkwardly menacing visage was cropped from this photograph? LINK: http://www.learnedleague.com/images/art/845y7c9n8348.jpg
Correct Answer: TONY BLAIR
Your Answer: Boris Johnson
Points Assigned: 2

Very gettable. It was between Blair and Johnson for me. I went the wrong way.

2. A particular conical glazed earthenware vessel provides the name for a renowned, slow-cooked composite meat and white-bean-based dish native to the French Languedoc. What is that dish?
Correct Answer: CASSOULET
Your Answer: Bouliabase
Points Assigned: 1

Never heard of this dish.

3. Columbus, Roswell, Albany, Gainesville, Duluth, Canton, and Dallas are all cities in what U.S. state? Note that these cities, which are listed in order by population, all have more prominent namesakes in other states.
Correct Answer: GEORGIA
Your Answer: Ohio
Points Assigned: 2

I don't know Georgia well at all. This was a complete guess.

4. An open rebellion in 1877 led (reluctantly) by Saigo Takamori, which was suppressed by the Japanese army and was rooted in a previous attempt to defeat the Tokugawa government, was the last significant uprising against the Meiji government by what group?
Correct Answer: SAMURAI
Your Answer: Samurai
Points Assigned: 0

Seems like a gimmie, right?

5. Harmen, Reynier, Claes, and Frans II, painters themselves, were all children of what 16th/17th-century Dutch portrait specialist?
Correct Answer: FRANS HALS
Your Answer: Rembrant
Points Assigned: 3

Never heard of Frans Hals.

6. The term PDA, for "personal digital assistant," was first used at 1992's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, in a keynote speech by John Sculley, in (indirect) reference to a device his company would formally introduce a year later that had what name?
Correct Answer: APPLE NEWTON
Your Answer: Newton
Points Assigned: 1

I think this will be difficult for someone in their 20's, but gettable for some one in their late 30's or older. I considered palm pilot, but decided newton was more likely.

Ben day 5

Pulled off a lucky 3(1)-1(2) win on defense yesterday to continue to hold station well above the rank I deserve given my <30% strike rate this season.

2 today.

1 :( I got thrown by the slightly menacing visage line and assumed it was Boris Johnson, even though some part of my brain was telling me that the lady looked a lot like Cherie Blair.

2  :( I though I had this with tagine, even though it isn't precisely conical. My opponent is from the south judging by his historical food gets so I doubt he will hit this

3 :( guessed Illinois. I had no real method to this one other than ruling out states I've travelled through a lot or states which contain the big brother versions of any of these cities. Americans: please opine on how easy or hard this question was for you for my future defensive purposes.

4 :) samurai. I guessed this for lack of anything better thanks to the last samurai movie with Tom cruise that seem to be set around then. It is strange to me that the samurai fought cohesively. I can't remember much from the movie. Most of what I know about samurai I learnt from clavell's shogun and an uprising against Tokugawa doesn't seem in their nature.

5 :( I guessed Rembrandt. Never heard of hals. Safe d3 here.

6 :) Newton. This was my proudest get of the season. When I first saw the question I thought I'd never remember the name of apple's Palm device. I thought for a while, eventually remembered that it had some sort of guy's name. I went through a whole lot of mundane names before taking a step back, and then Newton came to me. A joyous moment to make up for the hours of thought I pumped into the day 1 mnemonic for zero reward.

Ben Day 4

A disappointing 1/6 after going the wrong way on 50/50s. Still I'm lucky to have 2 wins given that I was only 6 right for the season going into today.

1 :( Don't know my rappers. Guessed Notorious BIG. Pretty sure that this came up in a quiz in the off-season, but the face of my rap knowledge cliff is so stark that there was no handhold for new random facts so they plummet into the abyss.
2 :( Was tossing up Isle of Mann vs Isle of Wight. Went the wrong way.
3 :) Odie.
4 :( I guessed Pesata - disappointing given that I was just in Mexico a few months ago. Given a peso is <6c, I never dealt with lower increments.
5 :( I guessed filuvial. I've been reading Clan of the Cave Bear series lately and loess gets mentioned every few pages, though I thought it was a type of grass.
6 :( Was tossing up WNBA vs Womens Soccer. Went with soccer. Hope Solo would think I'm a coward.

Steiny Day 4

Welcome back to the blog! Sorry for the confusion for the first three days!

1. :( Never heard of him, guessed Dr. Dre

2. :( Guessed Jersey

3. :) Gimme

4. :) Just knew this one

5. :( Guessed sand, was hoping Thorsten was going with the super duh kind of answer

6. :) Very easy, weird to combine a sports and poetry question...

Dave M day 4

Hope this works!

4/6 on day 4 following a 2,0,1 in the first 3 days, which was not a good start to the season.

1 :( No idea and went with Ice T (also the cold theme like Jesse). D2

2 :) Also the only English island I could think of with a Newport on it. Carisbrooke is also incidentally the name of the rugby stadium in the town in NZ where I grew up. D3

3 :) Got this eventually, although my mind wouldn’t get off Otis for a while, which I knew was incorrect. D1, should probably have D0ed

4 :) I can’t remember where I heard this but similar to the French centime. D0, should probably have given it a higher defense.

5 :( Close. Went with Gneiss rather than Loess. D2

6 :) WNBA was just a lucky guess as it wasn’t one of the big men’s leagues. D1

Jesse LL70 Day 4

Hello All! Let's see if this works. 3/6 today for me.

1. "How Ya Like Me Now," the title track from his 1987 album, was one of a number of diss tracks this artist directed during his career toward his rival, LL Cool J. Who is this artist, born Mohandas Dewese in NYC in 1962?
Correct Answer: KOOL MOE DEE
Your Answer: Ice Cube
Points Assigned: 1

I had no idea, but figured it was another ice/cold related rapper. Went with the wrong one.

2. Before his trial (and conviction and execution) for high treason in 1649, Charles I was imprisoned in Carisbrooke Castle, near the town of Newport on what English island?
Correct Answer: ISLE OF WIGHT
Your Answer: Isle of Wight
Points Assigned: 2

This was the only island I could think and I only know of it because of the famous music festival. I had no idea about the historical tie.

3. What is the name of the character in this image? LINK: http://www.learnedleague.com/images/art/4997vb87b58857btbt9.jpg
Correct Answer: ODIE
Your Answer: Odie
Points Assigned: 0

I think I would have known this anyway, but after hearing the Garfield Monstrosity multiple times, it was unmissable for me. For your enjoyment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PExKw38rntw

4. What is the name used for the fractional 1/100th subunit of the Mexican peso, Brazilian real, and other currencies of Latin America?
Correct Answer: CENTAVO
Your Answer: Bolivar
Points Assigned: 2

I knew Bolivar was wrong, but didn't know what was right.

5. What geologic term, from German and first used to describe deposits along the Rhine River valley, refers to fine-grained silt-sized sediment believed to have been formed by the grinding of glaciers and deposited by the wind?
Correct Answer: LOESS
Your Answer: Shizer hozen
Points Assigned: 3

I have heard of Loess but could not recall it.

6. "The sun burned in the reservation sky like a fever dream animal." This line is from the short story "In the Belly of the Death Mother" by Native American writer Craig Kee Strete. Four of the words in the passage are identical to the names of four teams in what professional sports league?
Correct Answer: WNBA
Your Answer: WNBA
Points Assigned: 1

Good question, but pretty easy for someone that is forced to watch WNBA commercials during the NBA finals.
