My understanding is that Port is linked to Porto the city in Portugal, rather than the country’s name itself. Certainly Porto is where all the Port lodges for the famous brands are – and it’s where the River Douro meets the ocean. Definitely worth a visit in post-pandemic times, we loved our trip there.
Checking Wikipedia, Port is linked to both names as the country name Portugal is derived from ‘Portus Cale’ which is in turn the ancient name of Porto the city.
