1 :) Nazca.  Definitely heard of these

2 :( peas.  Thought maybe it was cute that "pearl" could be pea and they open up like pearls in a clam and why not?  Also thought of something like rice of orzo which seemed pearl-like but orzo seems unusual and not eaten 3-pounds worth on average.  How on earth does this relate to oil?   May have to google (and thanks to Seif for the Margaret connection).

3 :( Eid. Right idea, wrong word. Figured it had something to do with Ramadan but didn't think of the word Ramadan. Was actually thinking it was the name of the various prayers during the day but I don't know those names or how many there are.

4 :( larynx. Was excited to think of this but doh!

5 :) Israel.  Nothing to add beyond what you have all highlighted

 Welcome back everyone!  4/6 to begin the season in this beautifully-named private rundle.  Worried there are a few gimmes, and I only got one right outside of them.

1)  Machu. 3/3 Never heard of them.  Thought I'd try Machu or Picchu.

2) Peanut 2/2  Was focused on natural foods, had no chance.  I tried margarine once and it was disgusting.  

3) Ramadan 2/2  Might not have thought of this if it hadn't just ended.  But given it's been all over the news, and twelve items in a complete set could be months, it seemed a good fit.

4) Calf 0/1  I started at the toes and went up, so got there pretty quickly.  

5) Israel 1/0 Speaking of Ramadan being in the news... LOL David S for your comment

6) embezzlement 1/1 seemed like textbook definition

I thought it was a bit of a trick question that Thorsten included the word olive in the question, as they are sort of pearl-like. I should have scored this much higher as this seems really hard to me. I would have never come up with margarine.

Welcome back, all!  If Steiny starts posting again, I'll move back to "Seif" in my headers, but for now I'm going to join Dave Mirkin in using my first name and last initial.

5/6.  Good day to start out the season with lots of good guesses.

1. Olmec :(, D33.  I knew this was wrong.  I had a couple of other ideas, but I knew they were also wrong.  So I just picked one of my wrong answers and put it down.  I'm thinking this may play as one of the hardest questions of the season, though I do realize that there are 149 questions to go.

2. Margarine :), D21.  No idea how hard this plays.  The key for me was that I knew that "margaret" is the Greek word for pearl.  Given that, it wasn't too hard to get to margarine as an educated guess.

3. Ramadan :), D22.  Sweet! I actually arrived at this from the wrong perspective.  I guessed that these might be a list of sequential Islamic holidays, but it turns out it was a list of months.  Still arrived at Ramadan as the answer.

4. Calf :), D12.  Only thing I could think of that was both a human body part and a different type of animal.

5. Israel :), D00.  Hmmm, a country that vaccinated people quickly and is also considered "controversial"?  Well, I can't recall ever hearing about any controversy surrounding Israel, but I felt the need to guess it anyway.

6. Embezzlement :), D11.  I've never heard of the court case, but it's a textbook definition of embezzlement.
