Brian Day 25 vs Seif

2.5/6 versus the possible Sierra C champion, I have either a 6(3) or a 3(2) vs his 5(3). We both misplayed our zeroes, and it comes down to nothin but a G thang.

1) 1917 2/2 saw this in the theater, a big deal was made over Deakins

2) Kenny Rogers 3/3 80s is my jam, but not country.

3) Beth. 1/2 I saw Gone girl when it came out, my daughter just read Little Women in her book club, Combine the two and I had a 1 in 4 chance

4) Fennec fox 1/0 I love sticking my head in the fox ears ar the Bronx Zoo

5) Colombia 2/1 I assume this is men’s/women’s World Cup, but no idea

6) Ji 0/1 I probably know this from The Karate Kid, and I think it is pronounced with a soft ‘g’, which would get me credit.  If it’s a hard g, no good.

Ben Day 25

3/6

1 :( Wonder Woman. Should I know who that guy is?
2 :) Williams. Amazing! now I need a new go-to country guess for the next few seasons.
3 :( Amy. Gettable
4 :) Fennick. Excuse spelling
5 :) France. gimme WC Hosts and winners
6 :( Ko. One for scrabblers?

Dave M day 25 v Carr LLL

I had a decent shot of promotion to Rundle C, competing with 2 others (including Steiny) for the 3rd spot, but I think my 1/6 from today will prevent that, so will stick in D next season.

1 : ( Star Wars – the Force Awakens. I figured this may be an effects-related prize and there were Star Wars movies in each year.       Big miss! D11

2 : ( Dolly Parton. I don’t know 1984 music videos! D22

3 : ( Mary. It’s weird I got 2 and 3 wrong with the same guesses as Jesse. D13

4 : ( Small Saharan. Would never have gotten close on this one. D22

5 : ) France. Countries immediately screamed Soccer World Cup, and France was missing entirely from the list. D00 as I figure this plays easy on sports questions.

6 : ( Ma. No idea. D31

See you in November!

Jesse Day 25

3/6. With a win today I take 1st place in C Winward. Not sure this will be enough.

1. Roger Deakins has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography fifteen times, finally winning the 2017 award on his fourteenth nomination, and again for a film from 2019. Name either of these films, neither of which are set in the present day, and which have a certain titular similarity.
Correct Answer: BLADE RUNNER 2049, 1917
Your Answer: Dunkirk
Points Assigned: 2

I was just talking about Blade Runner 2049 earlier this week. I did not see 1917. No way I was getting this.

2. The "Rowdy Friends" from a (rather dated) 1984 music video include George Jones driving a riding lawnmower, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson playing poker, and Jim Varney being transported via bovine. What country artist sings the song in the video?
Correct Answer: HANK WILLIAMS, JR.
Your Answer: Dolly Pardon
Points Assigned: 3

Oh, him.

3. The protagonist of Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit, the title character of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, and one of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women all share what first name?
Correct Answer: AMY
Your Answer: Mary
Points Assigned: 2

I saw Gone Girl, but I did not remember much. Also, I preferred the sequel, Bye Boy.

4. The fox with the largest ears (each one up to six inches long), which help it disperse body heat in the dry and hot climate of the Sahara Desert, is actually the smallest of all fox species, at just 16 inches from tip to tail. What is this alliteratively named fox?
Correct Answer: FENNEC FOX
Your Answer: Fennick Fox
Points Assigned: 0

Seems like a gimmie.

5. What single country fills in both blanks in this partial, chronological list of sports pairs: \ ...England/England, Mexico/Brazil, West Germany/West Germany, Argentina/Argentina, Spain/Italy, Mexico/Argentina, Italy/West Germany, USA/Brazil, ______/______, Japan & South Korea/Brazil... \ (Note, just one answer is required.)
Correct Answer: FRANCE
Your Answer: France
Points Assigned: 1

I clearly remember watching the finals in a youth hostel in Beijing.

6. In English, the training uniform used in various Japanese martial arts (e.g., aikido, karate, jujutsu, etc.) is most-often referred to by what two-letter word?
Correct Answer: GI
Your Answer: Gi
Points Assigned: 1

First thing that came into my mind.

Seif Day 25 vs. Brian (LLL)

3/6.  Despite a pretty mediocre showing in LLL this season, I somehow sneaked into 1st place in Sierra C following Day 24 with a 1 point lead, so if I pull off a win today, I can win.  I'm happy with 3/6, as these were decidedly unfriendly questions for me, but it may not be enough for the victory.

1. 1917 :), D11.  I didn't know anything about who the cinematographer was, but I interpreted the question as looking for two recent movies that were highly rated and took place in the past.  Based on that, 1917 made a lot of sense.  It's lucky I didn't consider movies that took place in the future, or I could easily have seen myself putting down Ready Player One and getting it wrong.  I never would have thought of a Bladerunner movie.

2. Brooks :(, D20.  No clue.  Should give Brian no problem.  Easy place for him to stick me with a D3 and get away with it.

3. Amy :), D01.  Second straight day I got a question due to a movie I watched during the pandemic (Gone Girl).  I would have had no chance on the other two parts of the question.

4. Ferret Fox :(, D22.  I had no clue.  Pure coincidence that I kind of got close (but was still definitely wrong).

5. France :), D32.  Great, great question.  First one had to recognize that this was about the World Cup, then figure out it was the 1998 host and winner.  Maybe my D for Brian was too high here.  We'll see.

6. Ko :(, D13.  No idea.

It's been a great season.  Have a great month and a half, everyone!

Re: Debbie Day 24

1/6 - only got Gouda.  Thought "adolescent" would be right for 5 and forgot about "Hell's Kitchen." Oh well!   Never really heard of the others (but considered "Marlborough" for the man :))
