My first thought was it would be a country that lost WW2, but I didn't think Japan was a Republic, and the Germany's would both be two-word answers (west, east). Korea too would be North and South. I then started going through countries in my head and I knew Ireland was a Republic, plus the timing felt right.

2. Ireland :), D11. I think this is pretty hard. I immediately thought of India, and I suspect this will trip up a bunch of people. But it was a bit too late for India, and the context didn’t quite work.

4. Imaginary :), D33. Gimme. Easy D33, as neither of my opponents has ever answered a math question correctly.

3/6 had a bit of a shocker today and really wasn't sure with defensive points either.

1) Bridge 0 I think this was the easiest question

2) India got my dates wrong India became a republic in 1950 and Ireland is far more usually know as the republic of, annoyed with myself should have got. 2

3) i saw the movie with Frank Sinatra 30 years ago but I didn't manage to dredge it up 3

6. captain :(  Just finished re-watching Band of Brothers but still never quite mastered these.  and... didn't read closely and thought it was the next one, not the blank one. Likely still would have missed.

Playing Brian today, and looks like he beat me 4-2, but I'm still happy with how I did on the questions. Way to nail the defensive point allocation (and the questions), Brian!

2 - Licorice :) Thought about this for a while, and I finally approached it from the perspective of "what confectionary ingredient has debatable appeal." The spelling of licorice helped me confirm it was probably eastern European, though I had no idea it had purple flowers. D12

Seif, Avalon B is a far cry from Sierra B, I got a win with 3 correct yesterday, and I see you're doing just fine.

1) Peter the Great 0/2  Absolutely no chance

2) licorice 1/1 The only root I could think of as a confection, and black licorice is certainly of debatable appeal

3) bicycle 3/2   Just came across a meme with Large Marge yesterday, so was already on my mind.  Not happy with my D seeing all your correct answers

4) Gershwin 2/0  ugh bad miss of a famous Yalie, Kiss Me Kate is the way in here.

5) gin, rum 1/1  This and Rummikub were a big part of my childhood

6) brigadier general 2/3  It had to be a type of general, and this sounded right, but I was not that confident about it.
