Brian Day 18

Over the previous four days I had a grand total of six correct answers, dropping me to my lowest get rate in 11 seasons.  And yet I suffered no losses on those four days, culminating with a resounding 1(1)-0(1) victory on Friday.  Sorry about that Dave M.  That luck was not going to continue, so it's a good thing I got a 5 today.

1) Chalet 1/3 no clue

2) Goodyear 1/1 I went to college with a Goodyear.  All he talked about was vulcanization.

3) Citizen Kane 0/1  I've never seen it, but was pretty sure it fit the bill.  King Kong never crossed my mind

4) Bluey 3/2  A dad on the Ringer podcast I listen to mentions Bluey all the time, this sounded like it fit the bill

5) Transylvania 2/2 Hesitated for a moment because it's in Romania, but a literary, Eastern European location has only one answer

6) Seder 2/0  First they take over the entertainment and banking industries, and now trivia?  When will they stop?

Dave M day 18 v Steiny

3-4/6 today. Friday I was busy but it was a 1/6 disaster just like Brian – and so I lost to him.

1 : ( Dormer. No idea and never heard of a Mansard style roof. D2

2 : ) Goodyear. I didn't know this fact but seems gimme-ish the way the question is written. D1

3 : ( Gone With the Wind. Should have thought about this one a bit more. D1

4 : ) Bluey. Kind of cheating, I have young nieces and nephews living in that part of the world. D3

5 : ) Transylvania. Was thinking maybe Hanseatic league but that didn't align with wald which is forest in German. Then I thought of Sylvan and it all made sense. D2

6 : | Passover. Did not read through the question clearly enough and just wrote down Passover rather than Seder. At least I'm certain Steiny will D0 me on this one the same way I D0ed him.

1. The first major work of a certain 17th-century French architect, an innovator of a simplified Baroque style, was the north wing of the Château Royal de Blois, which featured the double-angled, high-pitched roof style named after him. What is that style?

Correct Answer: MANSARD
Your Answer: Mansard
Points Assigned: 2

I studied the history of architecture as a cluster in college.

2. Scotsman John Boyd Dunlop, the founder of the Dunlop Rubber Company, invented the pneumatic tire in 1888. What other man, namesake of another prominent (and competing) company, discovered the process for the vulcanization of rubber around 50 years prior?
Correct Answer: CHARLES GOODYEAR
Your Answer: Goodyear
Points Assigned: 1

I was deciding between Firestone, Michelin, and Goodyear and guessed right.

3. The first two releases by the Criterion Collection, which publishes "important classic and contemporary films from around the world", were LaserDisc releases in 1984 of legendary American films from 1941 and 1933. Name either of these films, both of which chronicle the downfall of their larger-than-life main characters.
Correct Answer: CITIZEN KANE, KING KONG
Your Answer: Citizen Kane
Points Assigned: 0

I knew Citizen Kane right away. Not sure if I would have gotten King Kong.

Correspondingly, by what English (and for that matter, Latin) name is this famous geographic and literary region known?
Correct Answer: TRANSYLVANIA
Your Answer: Bohemia
Points Assigned: 3

My father is actually from Transylvania. I got thrown off as I wasn't expecting a place in Romania to have a contemporary German name.

This should play easy for our group.

David S Day 18

4/6, which was my best case scenario today.

  1. Bernard :(, D33. No idea. I’m guessing this will play hard.
  2. Goodyear :), D01. I knew he developed vulcanization, so this was straightforward.
  3. Citizen Kane :), D22. The year seemed right for Citizen Kane. I never would have guessed King Kong.
  4. Dingo :(, D22. No idea.
  5. Transylvania:), D11. Glad to get this. I also considered Bohemia, but Transylvania seemed like a better guess.
  6. Seder :), D10. I think I once read about this :).

Brian Disaster of a Day 17 vs Mirkin (LL) and Brad (LLL)

1/6 when I felt confident about 4.   Ouch

1) McDonald 1/1 I had no idea, but I think Dave and Brad might be part of Ben's board game enthusiast cabal.

2) Cadet 1/0  Then what's a cadet?

3) Seurat 2/3  This is definitely that painting on the island from Ferris Bueller... and no, I guess it's not.  Turns out that's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

4) Iron Curtain 0/1  Finally I got one.

5) Sparks 3/2  Had to be Moriarty or Sparks, I guessed Sparks.   Who is Hoover?

6) Three Men and a Baby.  2/2  Easy peasy. Never saw it, but this is a no brainer.  Followed up by Three Men and a Little Lady, and... there was a third one?  And didn't Three Men and a Baby come out a few years before 1989?  Don't worry, it's definitely correct.
