Brian Day 1 vs WinnR

It's good to be back, 4/6 to start. Will be a fun season in C rundle with several of us involved. 

1) Arabian Sea.  Nice to get a gimme in one of my weaker categories.  D0/1

2) Mortal Engines.  This is not a gimme in one of my weaker categories.  I should prob get around to reading it one of these days.  I'm guessing this is easy for anyone who's read it.  1/3

3) Houston.  The first few times I heard it, I didn't realize it was Whitney.  I was just psyched it was on Z100 so my kids would listen to it. I told them it was a remake of a song from when I was a kid.  One daughter rolled her eyes, and my other daughter said, "Dad, nobody cares what you listened to when you were a kid or that you didn't have a cell phone."  Luckily, eventually I heard a DJ say who was singing.  2/2

4) Guillotine.  First thing that came to mind, made the most sense. Surprised it was invented that late, but it was certainly used frequently around this time.  1/1

5) San Francisco.  Federal Reserve Banks immediately came to mind, but it took awhile to dig out SF. The western US was conspicuously missing, and SF rang a bell.  Should be impossible for non-business people.  3/0

6) Eye.  Should have thought about this longer, I just got sick of going through the alphabet to form 3 letter words. 2/2.

Pelc Day 1 vs Gideon (LLL)

Nice to be back. Not so nice to have to face Gideon on day 1 in LLL.

5/6 should at least make it interesting.

1. :) - SI wasn't positive (I never am with geography) but the Arabian Sea made sense. D1/1

4. :) - 1789 gave it away, bad D here. D2/2

5. :( - I spent a lot of time on this and couldn't figure it out - I'm usually pretty good at these list clues. I definitely should've guessed a better city west of Dallas than Phoenix but didn't have a real shot here. Thanks to Seif for clarifying the answer b/c I had no clue what it was referring to. Makes me feel a bit better about my defense. D3/3 

6. :) - This was just a guess and was surprised that it was correct but, upon reflection, it's really the only possible guess. D2/1

5/6 today.

1. Arabian Sea. I thought this was relatively easy.

2. I should have gotten this one. I put The Man in the High Castle. I guess this was easy since everyone else seems to have gotten it.  

3. Whitney Houston. I'd think anyone who hears any pop music these days would know this. I gave it a ZERO for one of my opponents!

4. Guillotine. 1789 gives this away, no?

5. San Francisco. VERY proud for having gotten this. 

6. Hue just came to me.

My first thought was persian Gulf, but that isn't a Sea and the Gulf of Adan is the South of Yemen. I tried to think of a Sea and then Arabian Sea came to mind. I was about 50% sure I didn't just make that up.

1789 is the french revolution and it mentioned it was made by a physician/politician. Guillotine made sense.

I had no idea and I still have no idea what this is referring to. I just guessed SF as another major city going Westward. I considered LA and Denver too.

1 :( Dead Sea. Changed from Arabian Sea because I thought I was confusing it with the Arabian/Persian Gulf. So instead went with an answer no where near the Indian Ocean. D0 for Seif because I assumed of the two, this one was the real geography question (since i couldn't make the connection on the other). D10

3 :) Whitney Houston. 1990 seemed early but for some reason I could hear her singing these words (must have heard the remix) and I was fairly confident it was correct. D33

5 :( Denver. I could tell we were heading east to west and assumed they were the foundational teams of some sports league 120+ years ago. Richmond, Virginia. So I was choosing between cities west of Dallas. I figured Cali was too far away for the travel so guessed Dallas. Santa Fe was an option too because of the railroady feel of the cities. D22

6 :) hue. My days working at Canon made this an Instaget. D22

Seif Day 1 vs. Kim (LLL)

Great to be back!  It seemed like a long off-season, but then again it always does.

4/6 today.  Not a bad start.  I think this might have been a very hard day but with questions that were generally friendly to me.

1. Arabian Sea :), D31.  I knew this was right, but I think this will likely trip a lot of people up.  Both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf are reasonable (albeit clearly incorrect) answers.  But I suspect many people will put them down.

2. 1984 :), D22.  I read this in high school and clearly remember it.  I think it will have a relatively high get rate overall, but given my opponents' strengths, they both got D2.

3. Jackson :(, D12.  To me, this question was just "Pick a singer who died after 1990 and hope for the best."

4. Guillotine :), D10.  Seemed like the only possible answer, especially with the key French Revolution date given.

5. San Francisco :), D01.  Federal Reserve regional branches!!!  As gimme as it gets for me, though I suspect this is very, very hard and that most people will be stumped.  Business/Econ is my LL and Kim's best and second best category, respectively, and that was my only reason for giving low D.

6. Mix :(, D23.  This was probably gettable.  But "mix" just popped into my head and I couldn't think of anything else.
