Debbie Day 1

I know I've gotten terrible at posting but I'm off to a happy, surprising start with a 4 today, so might as well get off on the right foot!

1 : ) Hawaii - threw me for a bit as I know they have mountains and get snow, but seemed to make sense. D0

2 : ) Scooby Doo - had no idea their names but Mystery Incorporated sounded kinda familiar, and non-human fit.  D1

3 : ( New Zealand. Not too far off... sounded Pacific Islander to me and Northern Islands made me think about New Zealand's north and south island (figured there were lots of them? Maybe not?) D2

4 : ( Haley Clementine.  Knew this was wrong but had the right letters (in the wrong order) D3

5 : ) nicotine.  Super psyched I pulled this out at the last minute. Was also stuck on arsenic as the only poison I could come up with or also thinking about absinthe (though I couldn't remember the name). D1

6 : ) Nike. Another happy guess... wasn't sure it was right but yay, it was. D2

Brian Day 1 vs Dave M LLL

Welcome back everyone, especially Jesse as I look forward to robust posting on this blog.  Ben is on vaca so I won't pester him until next week.

3/6 to begin my first season in Sierra D

1) Kansas 3/2  Coin flip between the Hawaii and the center of the mainland; ultimately decided there's no way hawaii has not gotten above 100

2) Scooby Doo 1/2  Their Mystery Van makes this a gimme for me

3) Japan 2/1 Something clicked in the back of my brain when I considered Japan

4) Johnson 2/3 Can picture her face but not her name

5) heroin 1/1  Feels like a bad miss, but also might be MCW

6) Nike 0/0  Routine piece of trivia?

a lucky 5(3)-5(4) tie vs Dave.   Looks like my D will hurt in LL, given how easy you all thought hawaii was and how Nike does not seem to be the gimme I thought.

Jesse Day 1 LL94

I'm back for this season! Hope everyone is well. Started with a 4/6

1. Every US state has recorded temperatures in the triple digits (F), but two states' highest recorded temperatures are exactly 100 degrees. One is Alaska; what is the other, which also holds the distinction of being the only state with a lowest recorded temperature above zero?
Correct Answer: HAWAII
Your Answer: Hawaii
Points Assigned: 2

I was pretty sure every other state would have gotten below 0 other than Hawaii. Surprised it maxes out at 100.

2. Rogers, Jones, Blake, and Dinkley were the last names of four members of a group dubbed "Mystery Incorporated". What was the name of the fifth (and only non-human) member of the group?
Correct Answer: SCOOBY-DOO
Your Answer: Bobo
Points Assigned: 3

Man, this is really easy in retrospect. Making this a three-pointer will haunt me. I just didn't give it much thought.

3. The people known as the Ainu were the earliest to live in what is today what country, predominantly on its northern islands?
Correct Answer: JAPAN
Your Answer: Japan
Points Assigned: 1

I know who the Ainu are.

4. Some of the most stunning and explosive testimony given during the 2022 hearings conducted by the US House committee investigating the Capitol attack of January 6, 2021, were allegations made at a surprise hearing on June 28 by what 26-year-old former aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows?
Correct Answer: CASSIDY HUTCHINSON
Your Answer: Madison
Points Assigned: 2

I could not pull the name even though I can picture her in my head.

5. The common name of a poisonous and addictive alkaloid, derived from pyridine and having the chemical formula C10H14N2, comes from a 16th-century French ambassador to Portugal who allegedly sent home seeds of the nightshade that produces the compound. What is that common name?
Correct Answer: NICOTINE
Your Answer: Nicotine
Points Assigned: 1

Addicative made my first thought Nicotine. Nightshade confirmed it.

6. The Greek sculpture Winged Victory of Samothrace, in the permanent collection of the Louvre in Paris, has an alternate name that replaces the term "Winged Victory" with another name, that of a goddess of victory. What is that name, familiar today in a different context?
Correct Answer: NIKE
Your Answer: Nike
Points Assigned: 0

I just knew this.

Dave M day 1 vs Brian LLL

Happy LL94 everyone. And another match up against Brian to start the season off, right where we left off last season. Starting with a 4, thought I was going to get 5/6.

1 : ) Hawaii. This seems reasonably straightforward, not many other states that are entirely temperate. D11

2 : ) Scooby Doo. Feels close to a gimme. D00

3 : ) Japan. I have read about the Ainu before. D22

4 : ( Stewart. I remember the news but not the name of the aide, so random guess answer. D12

5 : ( Arsenic. Confident I was correct here but was definitely thinking in the wrong direction. D21

6 : ) Nike. Surprised to remember this but it came right to me after picturing the statue in question. D33

David S Day 1

Welcome back, all!

5/6. Great start on a bunch of very friendly questions, but I blew a 6/6 on a stupid mistake.

  1. Hawaii :), D11. This has been a favorite trivia question of mine for years. Seems very gettable with the last part of the clue despite being unintuitive.
  2. Scooby Doo :), D20. Came to me about 2 seconds before I hit submit with a throwaway answer. Should play easy for a lot of other people that probably means.
  3. Japan :), D02. Gimme for me. Not sure how hard this will play.
  4. Hutchinson :), D21. Gimme except that I couldn’t remember if that first “n” was in her name or not. Luckily I left it in.
  5. Tobacco :(, D13. I can’t imagine this pays. What a dumb mistake. I was pretty sure I had the plant right but had considered cocaine. I didn’t even think about the plant vs. drug distinction.
  6. Nike :), D32. Sweet. Happy to get this. I guess I remembered something from my brief visit to the Acropolis over a decade ago.
