Jesse Day 8

5/6. Pretty easy day. I lost my last 5/6. Hoping that doesn't happen again today.

1. According to the popular nursery rhyme, Mary's garden grows with silver bells, pretty maids all in a row, and what else?

Correct Answer: COCKLE SHELLS
Your Answer: a green thumb

I knew that it should rhyme with Bells, but didn't come up with shells. I sort of recall this rhyme.

Correct Answer: EVANDER HOLYFIELD
Your Answer: Holyfield

Seems like a gimmie, right?

Correct Answer: STAR WARS
Your Answer: Star Wars

If you are in your late 30's and American I also would think this was a gimmie.

4. Édouard Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, pictured here, features within it what is believed to be one of the first formally registered trademarks. It is a trademark for what brand? LINK: http://www.learnedleague.com/images/art/59806uv0589.jpg
Correct Answer: BASS PALE ALE
Your Answer: Bass Beer

Correct Answer: PLATYPUS
Your Answer: Platypus
Points Assigned: 1

I guess I know this from my time in Australian zoos?

Correct Answer: WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Your Answer: Western Australia
Points Assigned: 2

I lived in Australia for a year and half, but I think I would have gotten this anyway because I love maps.

Ben Day 8

5/6.  2 Australian questions in one round set me up nicely.

3 :) Star Wars. Ahh Cardinal of the Kremlin - my first Clancy. fond memories.

1. What U.S. city is home to both the second-oldest major league baseball stadium currently in use (after Boston), as well as the second-oldest stadium in current use by the NFL (after Los Angeles)?

Correct Answer: CHICAGO
Your Answer: Chicago
Points Assigned: 0

Seems easy to me. Wrigley was obvious and I knew their football stadium (Veterans, war memorial, something like that) was old too.

2. The Radetzky March, Tales from the Vienna Woods, Music of the Spheres, the Alpenrose polka, and Ariadne auf Naxos are all works by composers that share what last name?
Correct Answer: STRAUSS
Your Answer: Strauss
Points Assigned: 3

This was guess based on Vienna being in there.

3. Alice Paul, Millicent Fawcett, and Emily Wilding Davison are among the people that could be described by a term which was first used condescendingly by journalist Charles Hands in London's Daily Mail but has since taken a positive connotation, and today is mostly obsolete, used only in a historical sense. What is that term?
Correct Answer: SUFFRAGETTE
Your Answer: Suffagrete
Points Assigned: 2

Spelled it wrong, but I couldn't think of a better answer. Glad it was right.

4. What is the name, used in North India and most common in the west, for the sweet milk pudding that is served as a dessert or during a meal, usually made with rice, and flavored with raisins, cardamom, cinnamon, almonds, pistachio, or other ingredients? Its South Indian equivalent is payasam.
Correct Answer: KHEER
Your Answer: Papayum
Points Assigned: 1

Could not think of it.

5. The four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, from the Harry Potter series, were each named after a different alliteratively named individual. Give the first name of any one of these four individuals.
Correct Answer: GODRIC, HELGA, ROWENA, SALAZAR

Correct Answer: HINNY
Your Answer: Ass
Points Assigned: 2

Nope. Went with dat Ass.

Dave M day 7

A 2/6 to finish off the week and I’m guessing a loss.

1 :) I was about to put in Cleveland (on the basis they have teams but presumably no money and therefore old facilities) but then remembered going to a Cubs game once and remarking at how pleasant Wrigley Field was. Then remembering being told it was almost as old as Fenway Park. D0 as sport is one of opponent’s top categories.

2 :( Like Ben I was strangely confident this was Bach. D3

3 :) I know Fawcett was a suffragette so it was pretty straightforward. D1

4 :( I have eaten this before but knew I wouldn’t get it. I put down Lassi on the ridiculous basis that it is a sweetish Indian food/drink and so maybe in the USA it might extend to cover Kheer. D2

5 :( Uh-oh. Should have looked at the previous Harry Potter question. I made a random guess of Theodore. D2

6 :( I also went with Ass which looks very pleasing written down. Shame it’s not correct. D1
