David S Day 19 vs. Brian (LLL)

4/6 vs. Brian in LLL. He and I have something like a 10-match streak of defending each other perfectly, but I feel like that may be ending today.

1. Statin :). D10. Easiest q of the day, I suspect.

2. Free at last :), D21. Pretty immortal words for an American, I think.

3. Bavaria :), D32. Gimme for me. But not sure this will play easy for Americans.

4. Herring :), D23. I knew this but struggled with D. Do I know it because herring is a Jewish food (in which case Brian will get it) or because I’ve had it on my many trips to the UK (Brian might not get it). I think - and based on my defense, hope - it’s the latter.

5. Ohtani :(, D02. What a terrible miss. My thought process didn’t even venture beyond baseball. This is tricky, but I think I’d have had it if I’d thought about it more.

6. Orient Express :(, D11. No idea. I’m sure Brian will correctly give me a D3 here.

Brian - Non Expanding Recreational Foam

How did none of us notice the acronym before Dave?

Turns out in reality that's not how it got its name, but it is a backronym some people swear by, and what a great question in retrospect.

David S Day 18

4/6, and that only due to a good guess.

1. Nerf :), D01. I assume most will figure it out from the acronym. That’s how I did. Not that I ever could have gone the other way and answered what nerf stood for.

2. Smith :(, D33. No idea.

3. Iroquois :), D12. Gimme for me, but this is NY-centric, so I’m curious to see how hard this plays.

4. Frankenstein :), D20. Really had no idea, but this seemed like the best guess. Glad to get it, though I suspect if this was my guess, it’s also what others will guess.

5. Instanbul :), D22. Cute question. I’d have had this without the “today” clue.

6. Swift, Cardi B :(, D11. lol. No idea at all.

Brian Day 18

5/6.  And while he's not my opponent, I'm chuckling at the thought of David S attempting to answer questions 4 and 6

1) Nerf 1/0   I came really close to submitting Silly String, but luckily I convinced myself that it was an expanding foam, and 'various forms' then got me to the obvious answer of Nerf.

2) Dunleavy 3/3  Will this compete with the Indian film for lowest get rate of the season?

3) Iroquois  1/1  Is this easier for NYers?  Certainly for Americans

4) Frankenstein  2/2  A gimme if you've seen it, though I did hesitate for a moment as the sweet Dr. Frank N Furter is from Transylvania.

5) Istanbul 0/2  Great phrasing of the question, the italicization of today is itself an important clue

6) Drake, Kendrick Lamarr 2/1   Normally there's no way I would know this, but last month this beef drove The Ringer to rank the greatest diss tracks.  And it was at that point I learned that Kendrick Lamarr is not a basketball player.

Jesse Day 18

4/6

1. The most popular polyurethane products developed as non-expanding recreational foam in various forms are sold under what brand name?

Correct Answer: NERF
Your Answer: Styrafoam
Points Assigned: 2

That is a big miss. I got lost in the question.

2. In 1896, the Boston Symphony premiered the Gaelic Symphony, widely cited as the first symphony written and published by an American woman. Who is this composer?
Correct Answer: AMY BEACH
Your Answer: O'Neill
Points Assigned: 3

Nope.

3. While Haudenosaunee is the name by which the nations of the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, and Seneca referred to their 17th- and 18th-century confederation (which later included the Tuscarora), the French and English used what other word when naming this league?
Correct Answer: IROQUOIS
Your Answer: Iroquios
Points Assigned: 1

I misspelled it.

4. The 1975 comedy musical film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and its original stage production The Rocky Horror Show, were variations on what classic 19th-century novel (evidenced by the name of Tim Curry's character in the film and the title of the musical's third song)?
Correct Answer: FRANKENSTEIN
Your Answer: Frankenstein
Points Assigned: 2

I have never seen it, but I took a guess based on bits of pop culture I have absorbed.

5. The 7th-century-BCE Greek king Byzas, according to one legend, is the founder of the city that today has what name?
Correct Answer: ISTANBUL
Your Answer: Istanbul
Points Assigned: 0

Byzantium=Constantinople=Istanabul

6. "Push Ups", "Taylor Made Freestyle", "6:16 in LA", "Family Matters", "Meet the Grahams", "Not Like Us", and "The Heart Part 6" are songs from April and May 2024 in a beef between what two individuals?
Correct Answer: DRAKE, KENDRICK LAMAR
Your Answer: Kendrik Lamar and Drake
Points Assigned: 1

I am aware of said beef.

Dave M day 18

My 5/6 yesterday lost to my opponent's 6 pack, shame.

4/6 today, spoilt by two historic geography questions alongside some real tough ones.

1 : ( Igloo. For some reason my mind went to coolers when I read recreation. D11

2 : ( Jones. Totally at sea here. My opponents both have Classical Music as their top category though so I D11ed.

3 : ) Iriquois (sp). My requisite one answer per season I know because of Civilization. D22

4 : ) Frankenstein. I figure this is at the gimme-ish end of theatre questions. D00

5 : ) Istanbul. I connected through the airport a few weeks ago. D22

6 : ) Drake, Kendrick Lamar. Risky D33 but pop is both my opponents' worst category.
