Dave M day 9 v Pelc LLL

I suffered the ignominy of forgetting the quiz on Friday and earning the dreaded 0(F). I somewhat made up for it today with the rare 6/6 against Pelc.

1 : ) Payola. I’m with Ben, thought this was more common knowledge than it would seem. D22

2 : ) CBS All Access. We had this for 3 months as my husband is a trekkie. D10

3 : ) McQueen. I remember his passing in 2010. It took me a couple of minutes to remember the name. I had ‘Alexander’ in my head but had it down as a last name. Glad it came to me eventually. D33

4 : ) Candle. I’ve read about items measured in terms of candles before. D12

5 : ) EBITDA. A daily headache for me this year. D21

6 : ) Scotland. This sort of question is the ultimate gimme for someone who grew up in the Edinburgh of the South (Dunedin) and lived in Scotland for two years, and saw this word everywhere as a result. Even before the geography element. D01

Seif Addendum

Agreed, Ben.  My answer wasn't sensible since I missed that part of the question.  Even if I had noticed it, I assure you I would still not have gotten the question right!

3/6

1 :) Payola. I thought everyone knew this. My D10 is looking like a poor choice based on the current reporting districts.
2 :( Prime video. Agonized over this v hulu. Waste of time. D23
3 :( Marc Jacobs. Seif - your answer isn't a sensible guess because the clue said "namesake" fashion brand. D11
4 :) Candles. D22
5 :) Ebitda. Business/commerce gimme. D01
6 :( Wales. I was sure that Dragn on the Welsh flag was a "Caledonian Dragon". No idea where that came from, and I felt a little weird thinning of Wales as the edge of the Roman Empire, but my gut was so strong I just went with it. D32

1. What is the term, which originated in a 1938 article in Variety magazine and is associated historically with disc jockeys, for a secret or indirect transfer of funds for a commercial favor (such as the promotion of a particular record)?
Correct Answer: PAYOLA
Your Answer: Shineola
Points Assigned: 0

Shoot, Shinola came to mind right away and I did not think any further. Apparently it was a shoe polish company that is now a luxury watchmaker.

2. The Good Fight, Star Trek: Picard, Why Women Kill, and Tooning Out the News are all original television series created for what subscription-based streaming video service?
Correct Answer: CBS ALL ACCESS
Your Answer: CBS All Access
Points Assigned: 1

I looked at what they had to offer and knew right away that I did not need this streaming service in my life.

3. English fashion designer Sarah Burton, who was the CFDA's International Designer of the Year in 2019 and designed Catherine Middleton's dress for her 2011 wedding, is currently the creative director for what fashion brand, whose namesake "hooligan of English fashion" died in 2010 at age 40?
Correct Answer: ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
Your Answer: Alexander Mcqueen
Points Assigned: 2

I remember he committed suicide.

4. While there is now an official SI unit for luminous intensity, that photometric quantity was formerly expressed in terms of the "power" of what type of object?
Correct Answer: CANDLE
Your Answer: Candles
Points Assigned: 2

Candles seemed right. Candelas?

5. In finance, an accounting measure sometimes used as an alternative to net income, to show a company's overall profitability, reports earnings before interest expenses, amortization, depreciation, and taxes are subtracted out. By what six-letter acronym is this measure most commonly known?
Correct Answer: EBITDA
Your Answer: NIBTAX
Points Assigned: 3

I had no idea.

6. While New Caledonia is a group of islands in the South Pacific administered by France, the original Caledonia was a land, just beyond the Roman Empire's frontier, that is roughly coterminous with what in the modern day?
Correct Answer: SCOTLAND
Your Answer: Ireland
Points Assigned: 1

Shoot.

4/6.  These were very friendly questions for me.

1. Kickback :(, D11.  I felt pretty confident here.  Now that I see the answer, I think this may be very hard.

2. CBS All Access :), D12.  I watched Star Trek: Picard.  Otherwise, I'd have had zero chance here.

3. French Connection :(, D33.  I consider it a moral victory that I was at least able to come up with an answer that could possibly have been correct.

4. Candle :), D02.  I've heard the term "candle power" plenty of times.

5. EBITDA :), D20.  About as gimme as you can get for me.  I assume it's very hard for non-finance (or perhaps even non-equity finance) types.

6. Scotland :), D21.  I wasn't certain about this, but it was my first thought.  After looking at the clues in the question and thinking about it for a while, I couldn't imagine it could possibly be anything else.
