Jesse Day 2

3/6

1. The most notable and newsworthy event that began on November 4, 1979, and ended 444 days later on January 20, 1981, took place in what city?

Correct Answer: TEHRAN
Your Answer: Teheran
Points Assigned: 0

It was the first thing that I thought of.

2. Macaronesia, a collection of volcanic islands in the North Atlantic off the coast of Northwest Africa, consists of four archipelagoes: one of which constitutes the independent nation of Cape Verde, two of which are Autonomous Regions of Portugal (the Azores and Madera), and what fourth, which is an Autonomous Community of Spain?
Correct Answer: CANARY ISLANDS
Your Answer: Canary Islands
Points Assigned: 1

This was just something I know from being a geography buff and working in travel.

3. Mathematically speaking, actor Angus T. Jones portrayed 20% of the titular cast of what popular television sitcom?
Correct Answer: TWO AND A HALF MEN
Your Answer: The A Team
Points Assigned: 2

I have never seen an episode of that show.

4. Iron(III) oxide, Fe2O3, occurs naturally as what mineral, which is typically red (hence its Greek-derived name) or reddish-brown, and is mined as a primary ore of iron (along with magnetite)?
Correct Answer: HEMATITE
Your Answer: Ferrite
Points Assigned: 3

I had no chance of getting this.

5. What word, which is the title of a Best Picture Oscar winner, is also likely the best-known item that fits in a list which includes Appassionata, Waldstein, Pathétique, Pastoral, Tempest, and Cuckoo?
Correct Answer: MOONLIGHT
Your Answer: Coda
Points Assigned: 1

I considered Argo after the first question, but thought Coda would fit with the musical theme. How could I forget about Moonlight/ La La Land?

6. A Georgian-era village lock-up sometimes referred to as "Prince Rupert's Tower", which is located not far from the River Mersey (and very near what was once Mother Noblett's Toffee Shop), is the centerpiece of the crest for what English soccer club? The crest also features the phrase "nil satis nisi optimum" ("nothing but the best is good enough"), which somewhat belies the recent performance of the club's men's side.
Correct Answer: EVERTON F.C.
Your Answer: Everton
Points Assigned: 2

I don't follow the EPL, but Everton came into my head immediately. My subconscious did some heavy lifting here as I had no idea that this was right.

Dave M day 2

Another 3/6, it was good enough for a win yesterday but not sure today.

1 : ) Tehran. Simple US history I think. D10

2 : ) Canary Islands. I'm a big fan of Madeira (spelt wrong by Thorsten) and the Azores as places to visit, Canaries not so much. D21

3 : ) Two and a half men. I figured 20% of titular cast would not be as simple as 5 people, so were there any shows with 10 or 2 ½ in the title – yes there were. D12

4 : ( Ferric Oxide. No idea. D02

5 : ( Parasite. Ahh David S that's what the link is – Sonatas. I loved Moonlight the film. D33

6 : ( Liverpool. Bad miss. Mersey got me to the right town and it was a toss up between the two clubs. I picked the more prominent one. I did wonder if I had missed something recent given the comment on poor performance, and Liverpool has been doing pretty well the past few years from what I have picked up. D10

Vs. TaylorZ LLL

4/6

1 :) Tehran. The hardest part of this question for me was trying to spell Tehran right this morning. D11

2 :) Canary Islands. D22

3 :) Two and A Half Men. I like this question. My dad loved this show, but if I didn't know who Angus T. Jones is, I don't think the math clues would have been enough. D00

4 :(. Magnesium. D33

5 :( Inception. I could only come up with Crash and Argo for one word Best Picture movies and they didn't seem right. D11

6 :) Everton. I know nothing about English league football, but my old roommate was an Everton fan. I guess Everton for just about every football related question. Worked out for me today. D22

I did not get credit for Kraft yesterday. I also now see just how stupid of a miss it was. I mentioned the 57 part of Heinz. I didn't realize it was Super Bowl 57 until I read the rest of the blog posts.

1/6 vs amdurs common d

3) party of five d0

4) feldspar d3

5) godfather d1

6) manchester united d1

David S Day 2

I think we had the most posters yesterday in a couple of years! I know I invited Laura, but who invited that Ben guy?

3/6. Thought I’d possibly done better, but I think I might get 3 points for one of my answers

  1. Tehran :), D01. Gimme.
  2. Canary Islands :), D11. Gimme again.
  3. Party of Five :(, D12. No idea, so I focused on the 20% clue. I think I made the best guess I possibly could. I kind of thought I would get it, so a bit disappointing.
  4. Hermite :(, D22. Ugh. Close but not quite on this. I knew it was something like this. I didn’t get the Greek clue, but I do now I that I see the correct name.
  5. Moonlight :), D30. This may end up being my best get of the season. I (surprisingly) recognized that these were all sonatas and then vaguely remembered there was a movie called Moonlight a few years back. So that ended up being my guess. Given how much of a stretch this was, I’m fairly surprised I got this right.
  6. Manchester United :(, D23. No clue.

Brian Day 1

What an impressive turnout on the blog for Day 1!   Welcome to newcomers Laura and Ben!

4/6 to begin my Avalon career

1) Combine 1/1 First machine to pop into my head, and reading the question figured it was short for combination

2) Heidi 3/3  I've heard of The Heidi Chronicles, prob from background exposure of being in New York City.

3) Michigan 2/2 No idea

4) Periscope 2/2 Surprised bugle wasn't used until so late.

5) Heinz (Kraft Heinz) 0/1 Not aware of any commercials, but Super Bowl LVII leads to Heinz 57.   Kim, you have a slim chance of getting credit as the company is now Kraft Heinz, hence my parenthetical.

6) Prince Harry 1/0 Couldn't miss this in the news.  But if you did miss it, the wording of the question doesn't do you any favors.

Laura Day 1

Hi everyone! I'm Laura and I live in Colorado where I am a management consultant and ski instructor. I got to ski with David and his family in Beaver Creek this year and he invited me to join LL - pretty excited to be here. For LL96, I'm in Rundle R Avalon - nice to know a lot of others here are in Avalon, though I'm of course in the rookie division.

4/6 today

1 - Thresher :( Now that I heard combine, DUH! I'm not up on my farm equipment... D1 (figured most people would know this even though I was ignorant)
2 - Heidi :) I was a theater major my freshman year of college, and don't remember the plot of this at all, but the name stuck in my head. D3
3 - Alaska :) Tlingit just sounds like a northern group to me but no idea why. D2
4 - Clover :( Was trying to think of various forms of ground cover and this fit the bill on flower color, plus clover sounded like it could be a type of military device. D2
5 - Heinz :) Sheer guess, didn't see this ad but was just trying to think of food companies and they are famous for 57. D1
6 - Prince Harry :) Assuming I get credit though I didn't put his last name? D0
