Debbie Day 1

Hi all.  Good to be back.  And thus far, world still seems to be standing?

Glad to start the season with 4/6

1.  Jello-O :) Pretty easy esp with the dessert reference. D1

2.  Palau :( Knew it was Easter Island but couldn't think of the name Rapa Nui and probably wouldn't have been able to come up with it. D2

3. Indiana and Illinois :) To my dismay, I / my family plays a lot of Monopoly. I find this game painfully boring. D1

4. motherboard :) Thank you, Sex and the City. D0

5. Veronica Lake :) Glad I pulled this out, was originally thinking an anagram of Bette Davis or something like that. D2

6. Guinness :( Good guess though, right?  D3

Seif Day 1

4/6.  Did this on advance access since I knew the risk of a forfeit would be huge.

1. Raisin :(, D00.  Was led astray by "boxes."

2. Rapa Nui :), D22.  Took a while on this, then I realized statue was a big clue.

3. Illinois, Indiana :), D12.  Gimme for me.  I've played plenty of Monopoly.

4. Motherboard :), D11.  Probably the easiest of the day.

5. Lake Judy :(, D21.  On the right track, but had no idea.

6. O'Higgins :), D33.  Not sure how I remembered this, but I've noted and remembered some ethnically incongruous names in some South American countries over the years.  I remember reading about this one.  Wasn't sure if it was Higgins or O'Higgins and got a bit lucky.

Brian Day 1 vs Ben

Welcome to a new day in America!!!! No I'm not talking about the election, I'm talking about the new season of LearnedLeague!!!!  3/6 to start the festivities.

1) Jello  1/2  In the 70s, there were still 'salads' whose main ingredient was Jello.  Hoping this is U.S.- centric enough that Ben puts raisins or some such.

2) Samoa  2/1   I knew this was Easter Island, but I blanked on the indigenous name and didn't want to answer 'Easter', so I threw in Samoa in case I was way off

3) Illinois, Indiana 1/1 Gimme once I got to the red properties (though Illinois is, thankfully, blue in real life)

4) Motherboard 0/0 I have a strange feeling Ben will know this

5) Lauren Bacall.  3/3 Just couldn't come up with her, probably because I was looking for Lake as a first name, so I threw in a husky voiced actress.  Very worried LA Confidential makes this easy.

6) Belfast 2/2 no chance.

Pelc Day 1 vs Mirkin

Hi everyone!
I made a new season resolution to start posting and following here again. It def adds to my enjoyment. Hoping I can find the time every day (also hoping this email address still works).

4/6 to start the season. As always, I'm not confident in my D.

1. :) - Didn't get this right away but then remembered seeing a random video highlighting these incredibly horrific-looking dishes. Might not have gotten there if I didn't remember that they claled one of them a 'salad.' D1
2. :( - I had no clue and prob could've gotten it but went with Hawaiian, which is a real bad guess. For some reason I didn't think about this one for long. D1
3. :) - Almost went with Connecticut and Vermont but switched last minute when I remembered these two and that CT and VT do not share a border. I assume that'll be the MCW. D2
4. :) - Only familial term that came to mind. D0
5. :) - Never heard of Lake Veronica but I've heard of Veronica Lake - who was the only actress from that era that had a body of water for a last name. Shoutout to LA Confidential, an awesome movie that is more responsible for me knowing her name than any of her movies. D3
6. :( - No clue, though I guess I've heard of him. I went with MacChile - which is an embarrassing BWA attempt. D2

Dave M day 1 v Pelc LLL

Happy election day +1 everyone! A measly 2/6 to get going this season for me.

1 : ( Raisins. Was really sure this would be right, but of course it’s Jello. D11

2 : ) Rapa Nui. Moai = Easter Island = Rapa Nui. D22

3 : ( Pennsylvania, Delaware. I’ve played the US version only a couple of times. D11

4 : ) Motherboard. Seems like a gimme. D00

5 : ( Wanda Lake. I guessed there would be a lake as one of the words, no idea about the other unfortunately. D22

6 : ( O’Connell. Suspect/hope this plays really difficult. I had no idea the Chilean independence leader was Irish. D33

Jesse LL87 Match Day 1

3/6. I am drained from last night.

1. Thanks in part to its inclusion in popular (at the time) recipes such as Under-the-Sea Salad, Sunshine Salad, and Crown Jewel Dessert, sales of what product peaked in the United States in the late 1960s at four boxes per person per year?
Correct Answer: JELL-O
Your Answer: Jello
Points Assigned: 0

Seems like a gimmie.

2. Mo'ai is a word meaning "statue" in what language, which shares its name with the indigenous name of the location where the language is spoken and the ethnicity of most of its speakers?
Correct Answer: RAPA NUI
Your Answer: Polynesian
Points Assigned: 2

I knew it was Easter Island, I just couldn't recall the word Rapa Nui.

3. On a standard US edition Monopoly board, there are two spaces that are adjacent and include in their names states which are themselves physically adjacent (i.e., they share a border). What are those two states?
Correct Answer: ILLINOIS, INDIANA
Your Answer: Connecticut and Massachusetts
Points Assigned: 1

I haven't played Monopoly in a long time.

4. The component of a computer that connects the various other parts of the computer together—such as CPU, hard drives, memory, optical drives, video and sound cards, etc.—is often known by what familial term?
Correct Answer: MOTHERBOARD
Your Answer: Mother Board
Points Assigned: 1

Seems relatively easy.

5. The name of a small body of water near Lancaster, South Carolina, when its two words are transposed, becomes the name of a popular, husky-voiced actor from the 1940s born Constance Frances Ockelman in 1922. What is that name (either the body of water or the woman)?
Correct Answer: LAKE VERONICA/VERONICA LAKE
Your Answer: Veronica
Points Assigned: 2

I was proud of myself for pulling this one. I knew her last name was lake. I was trying to decide between Vicky and Veronica, but decided Vicky Lake was my brain getting confused with Ricki Lake.

6. The Chilean independence leader who served as that country's first Head of State in 1818 was a member of what Irish noble family?
Correct Answer: O'HIGGINS
Your Answer: Dublin
Points Assigned: 3

I was just in Chile two years ago and there were a bunch of things named after him, including the main road in Santiago. I just could not pull the name.
