Ben Day 7

Welcome Eleanor!

3/6 for me today, with less regret than usual. I'm down 2-3-2 against today's opponent, so hopefully I get to even up the ledger today.

Steiny - I see that using this email posting technique we all post as steiny171. Is there a way to enable us to post as ourselves? Not sure why I'd want that - maybe for commenting. Just feels neater.

1 :) Chicago. I figured I had 2 teams to increase my chances, and I know from playing Hardball on PC in the mid 90s that one of the Chicago ballparks has ivy on the wall so that seems pretty old.

2 :( I thought I had this one. I knew there was a JS Bach and a JC Bach, so I wrote Bach.

3 :) suffragette. This came to me almost immediately, even though I hadn't heard of any of these ladies.

4 :( I've had kheer but couldn't pull the name. I wrote "Hasty Hindi Pudding"

5 :) I wrote Salazar. I was also fairly sure on Godric. Rowena I probably would have gotten (I had Ravena in my head but knew that was a little off) and would not have gotten to Helga. My opponent got the Harry Potter question right 6 seasons ago so I D1ed, though in hindsight I should have gone D0.

6 :( I wrote ass, knowing it was wrong, but liking ass. I thought I'd kick myself when I saw the answer, but I was never going to get Hinny.

Eleanor Day 6

Hey folks! New arrival, nice to join the fun!
Day 6 was weirdly good for me (results NOT typical)

1 :) The Rock got this thanks to Dwayne + Gibraltar
2 :) "Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti" (I think anyone who didn't specify the niceness of the chianti should have lost the point)
3 :) Prince Hal. Hal Prince is a god in my world.
4 :) Vicksburg. Been there. It is very unusual for a civil war battlefield because they let regiments and companies and towns build monuments all over the place and it's a crazy hodgepodge.
5 :) Lemon Drops (social?)
6 :(  "Jack" grrrrr!!!  Should have known this. Dumb dumb dumb

Gideon Day 6

Whew, crazy season so far.

5/6 Today. Up against branch-mate SilvermanA.

1 :) D1 The Rock
2 :) D0 Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti (thllp thllp thllp)
3 :) D2 Prince Hal
4 :( D2 New Orleans - Considered Vicksburg but went with a city that I was positive was on the Mississippi instead.
5 :) D1 Lemon Drops
6 :) D3 Stan

Nice to join you all again!

Ben Day 6

My improbably lucky run continues, and I now sit at 4-1 despite 9 right for the season.  I continue my attempts to fail today. 2/6 should finally ensure a sound defeat on an easier day.

1 :( I guessed Ventura.  Stupid stupid stupid. RTFQ.  I didn't realize I was looking for a nickname. If I'd gotten that, the only prison nickname I could think of is 'The Rock' so it would have been easy. Pathetic miss.

2 :) Fave beans and chinati. thp-thp-thp-thp-thp-thp.

3 :( Close here.  I figured it was Little something or Prince something, so I was going to test Thorsten's surname requirement by just putting down "Little" or "Prince" as it would be the surname of the Tony person.  I put down "Little" and was wrong. Curious to know whether just the surname would suffice.

4 :( I guessed Wounded Knee. No shot at this one.

5 :) lemon drops.

6 :( Ugh.  I figured it would be a geographical term, but Persian put me on the Iran track. I was tossing up between "Ira" (from Iran, Iraq) and "Terry" (Tehran). I went with Terry because it was more clearly a nickname. Great question!

Jesse Day 6

5/6! Lots of good guessing.

1. A semi-retired wrestler, a former federal prison, a British Overseas Territory, and a sports arena in Newark, New Jersey, all share what nickname?
Correct Answer: THE ROCK
Your Answer: The Rock
Points Assigned: 2

Good question. I wrote down a list of the most famous wrestlers I could think of, the Rock being one of them. I then thought of Alcatraz, and then thought of Gibraltar, to which I've been. The odd thing is I grew up in a town next to Newark, but had no idea what the name of the arena is there. Guessing it is the prudential center, hence the name the rock?

2. In the film The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter tells Clarice Starling that he once ate a census taker's liver with beans and wine. Specifically, what type of beans, and what Italian wine (two answers needed)?
Correct Answer: FAVA, CHIANTI
Your Answer: Fava beans and a nice chianti
Points Assigned: 0

Iconic film line.

3. The young Henry V of England in Shakespeare's Henry IV plays has a sobriquet that is common particularly in literary scholarship, though not the plays themselves. That two-word moniker, when reversed, gives the name of a 21-time Tony Award winner. What is either name?
Correct Answer: PRINCE HAL/HAL PRINCE
Your Answer: Fossee
Points Assigned: 3

Never heard of the guy and my Shakespeare knowledge is pitiful. Opponent is a pretty good at theater so the 3 points could burn me.

4. While the high-water mark of the Confederacy was reached during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, contemporaries were quicker to recognize the grand strategic importance of the surrender the very next day of rebel forces defending what city and Mississippi River stronghold?
Correct Answer: VICKSBURG
Your Answer: Vicksburg
Points Assigned: 1

Total guess derived from the lyrics to The Band song, The night they drove old dixie down. Surprised I was right.

5. According to the lyrics of the famous song from The Wizard of Oz, somewhere over the rainbow, troubles melt like what?
Correct Answer: LEMON DROPS
Your Answer: lemon drops
Points Assigned: 1

I sang it to myself several times and kept thinking butter drops, but that isn't a thing. Then I though maybe it was butter cups. But those are flowers. Then I cam up with lemon drops.

6. What English male forename (nickname, to be precise) is also, unrelatedly, an Old Persian term for "land"?
Correct Answer: STAN
Your Answer: Stan
Points Assigned: 2

Good question! My company launches a Multi-Stan trip today so I have Stan on my mind.

Dave M day 6

Tied yesterday with 4/6 and 3/6 today which may be a loss if the Wizard of Oz question is commonly known

1 :) I got this from the wrestler and Gibraltar. D1

2 :) This must be pretty common knowledge. D0

3 :( Guessed ‘learned’. D3

4 :) Only battle on the Mississippi I know of. D1

5 :( Went with snow. Hopefully this isn’t easy for my opponent. D2

6 :( Clever answer now I’ve seen it but I was nowhere near getting it. D2

Steiny Day 6

Getting pummeled in Rundle B, I see relegation in my future....

1. :) Got it from the wrestler and the prison...love Ballers now with him, who else is watching?

2. :) Probably most famous line from movie, this has to be a 90%+ get

3. :( Guessed Andrews Julia...

4. :) Only Mississippi river town battle I could think of, was very pleased to see it come through

5. :) Know the song very well

6. :( Guessed charlie

4/6 but on an easy day against top player in my rundle...I am expecting to lose to a 9(6)
