Dave M day 10 v Kim

Some ups and downs while thinking through the answers today but ended up with the 4/6 I was expecting.

1 : ) Stepford Wives. Seems like a reasonably simple movie question. D01

2 : ( Stencil. Neat question. Had no idea. D33

3 : ) Marco Polo. Location and timing really strongly pointed towards him. D11

4 : ( Dunkin Donuts. I got fixated on the DD and couldn’t think of any other brands with those initials. A google search reveals I was close, had no idea Munchkins were a donut item sold there. D22

5 : ) Lil Nas X. I loved his transparent attempt to generate outrage for marketing purposes and that it paid off for him too. Very entertaining music video. D10

6 : ) Sunni. Seems pretty gimme-ish for Middle Eastern history. D22

Brian Day 10 vs Pelco

9(6) and I think I'll need it versus the Carr Comrades leader

1) Stepford 0/0  Could only be Stepford Wives.   Never saw it, but I'm pretty sure they were brainwashed to be obedient, the robots euphemism could cause confusion if you don't know it.

2) Grafitti 3/3  Pretty sure this is a recycled question, otherwise I could never get

3) Polo 1/1 Briefly considered Khan, but Marco Polo made more sense, and rang a bell from nature shows.

4) Munchkins 1/1 Great question!!! I thought of Dunkin Donuts right away for DD, but didn't think donut would be that recent of a word and moved on to the literary angle. Got stuck on the invented words vorpal, jabberwocky, and runcible for awhile, until I thought of movies and landed on the Wizard of Oz.

5) Lil Nas X 2/2 Sometimes the inane shit I see on twitter pays off

6) Sunni Islam 2/2  Using CE instead of AD felt like a clue for a non-Christian religion, and I thought AH could indicate the year of Mohammed's death and the resulting schism. I hesitated because we just had a Ramadan question, but I couldn't think of what else it could be. (Turns out H is Hijrah, 'the Prophet's migration from Mecca to Medina')

3/6

1. In a 1975 film, the town of Westport, Connecticut, was among those that stood in for what fictional New York City suburb, where many of the men are business professionals, and most of the women are robots?
Correct Answer: STEPFORD
Your Answer: Westworld
Points Assigned: 2

I had no idea. I have heard of the Stepford Wives, but didn't know it had something to do with robots.

2. An artistic term for a medieval and Renaissance technique, where paint is applied over gold leaf and partially scraped away, is today more commonly used—minus its leading silent "s" and typically in the plural—for a very different method and type of artistic expression. What is the term?
Correct Answer: GRAFFITO/SGRAFFITO/GRAFFITI
Your Answer: Sgilding
Points Assigned: 3

Ohhh, I have heard of this.

3. A subspecies of argali, a pale brown sheep native to Central Asia and considered to be the largest living sheep, has a common name referencing what person, who encountered the animal in the 13th century?
Correct Answer: MARCO POLO
Your Answer: Marco Polo
Points Assigned: 1

It was the only person that made sense. Plus, I think have heard of the Marco Polo sheep.

4. What word, which was invented in a classic work of literature in 1900, is now (in its plural version) a US trademark currently owned by an entity named DD IP Holder LLC?
Correct Answer: MUNCHKINS
Your Answer: Photos
Points Assigned: 2

Oh... Cool question. I am guessing there was some lawsuit about this.

5. "Satan Shoes" are 666 pairs of altered Nike Air Max 97s produced and sold (drawing a lawsuit from Nike, Inc.) in 2021 by an art collective named MSCHF in collaboration with what rapper?
Correct Answer: LIL NAS X
Your Answer: Lil Nas X
Points Assigned: 1

This was in the news a few weeks ago.

6. The Battle of Karbala in 680 CE (61 AH) is significant for its role in a schism that created two separate entities, both of which still exist today. Give the common name for either of these two entities.
Correct Answer: SHI'A, SUNNI
Your Answer: Sunni
Points Assigned: 0

Seems like a gimmie.

3/6 vs steiny

1) stepford d1/0
saw the remake

2) sfumato d2/2
thought this had a shot

3) marco polo d1/1
didnt know this but didnt see what else it could be

4) plastic d3/3
thought the dd stood for dow/dupont

5) drake d2/2
had not heard about this

6) sunni d0/1
timing made sense

David S Day 10 vs Steiny (LL)

A much better 5/6. I did these yesterday with advance access since I’m traveling this weekend. Brian, I can’t believe I lost to you yesterday on a question you’d given me 8 days earlier. I guess my retention of pop music knowledge is limited to one week max.

1. Stepford :), D00. If it’s easy for me, it should be easy for most people.

2. Graffiti :), D31. Very happy to get this. The biggest clue to me was that it was mentioned as plural, but unlike elsewhere in the question and unlike in question 4, there was no mention of an “s” being what made it plural. This is what put me on the right track.

3. Marco Polo :), D23. Never heard of the sheep, but the timing made sense. High D because this doesn’t play to my opponents’ strengths.

4. Dirigibles :(, D22. What a great question. I had no chance. Even if I’d known DD was for Dunkin’ Donuts, I still don’t think I would have made the Oz connection.

5. Lil Naz X :), D11. This made the mainstream news enough that I heard about it. Glad spelling doesn’t count!

6. Shia Islam :), D12. The word “entities” in the question threw me a bit, but I knew Sunni and Shia had to be right here.

Brian Day 9 vs. David S (CC)

 3/6 but not the 3 I expected.  I sense a 3(3)-3(3) tie.

1) The Postman Only Rings Twice 2/3  Ouch this hurts.  Knew exactly what it was talking about and fumbled.  Though I did have a chuckle picturing Dave try to think of 1946 crime movie featuring Waterworld.

2) Michigan 3/2  I don't even know if I can name the entire Big Ten.  I ruled out Indiana figuring this was before Bird's time. Turns out he went to Indiana State, not Indiana.

3) Mister Mister 1/1   Last week I ran a trivia night, attended by Dave (and Ben), and in a round themed "The Name's the Same", I asked a question about Duran Duran.  With that possibility of it ringing a bell for Dave, I give him a D1.  Also, pretty sure it's Wild Boys, not The Wild Boys, which is why I went with Mister Mister, just in case. (A question I discarded in favor of Duran Duran asked about the band which performed Broken Wings and Kyrie.)

4) zinc 2/1  Educated guess, but surprised I got it. I narrowed it down to three choices.  Nickel as in nickel-plated, and magnesium and zinc because they can bond with oxides and hence, I assumed, prevent rust. I figured nickel-plated is nickel-plated, and Mg coating would be flammable.

5) Calamity Jane 0/0  I binge watched Deadwood a few years ago.

6) Sap 1/2  Relatively late submittal for me as I worked on this in the back of my mind, confident it would come to me.  What a waste of the back of my mind.  No chance, and I still don't know what shrive/shrove has to do with pancakes. (looked it up.. oh, so not the relation to pancakes I had expected.)

I eked out a 4(3) -3(3) as we both waste our zeros.  Duran Duran did not stick in Ben nor Dave's mind.  No one watched Deadwood, and I didn't watch college basketball.

Re: Debbie Day 9

Another 2 - coulda been a three but doh! Pleased to be doing well in E as I'd love to get back up to D!  Hopefully today doesn't hurt me too much

1 :( In a WaterWorld.  Was sure this was Waterworld and... nope!

2 :( Michigan. Doh! I put Indiana down but then switched to this. Truly had no idea though.

3 :) Duran Duran.  Easy peasy (for me anyways).

4 :( alumnium.  Nope.

5 :) Calamity Jane. Glad she came to me first. If I'd remembered Annie Oakley I likely would have thought that was right.

6 :( Pentecost. Thought maybe that could be right? What on earth is this?
