Debbie Day 2

Another 2/6, which was a surprise in more ways than one

1 :)  lamp.  Glad I guessed this at the end.  Was thinking umbrella for awhile (probably bc Mary Poppins) and just couldn't remember what it was for Brick (loved Anchorman but haven't seen in forever). Then thought of genie, and lamplighter, and took a good and correct guess.   D1

2 :(  Grapes of Wrath. Which I totally thought was right.  Was thinking of the story Of Mice and Men but mixed up with another Steinbeck novel set in Salinas. And knew there was "Of" in the name. Doh.  D1

3 :(  Green. Didn't remember this (but knew Green wasn't right). Was thinking Independent but also know the American Independent Party is actually a white nationalist group since my husband accidentally signed up then had to exit. D3

4 :(  fritos. I know this is a thing with chili and I love fritos. D0

5 :)  Shakers. Pretty easy if you are from New England I think.   D2

6 :(  mink. thought this was right D2

Dave M day 2 v Seif

A terrible 1/6 today, you win by a mile Seif, correctly forecasting how terrible the questions were! I got Reform Party and that was it. I do know of Mice and Men and that Salinas + 1930s = Steinbeck, but thought it might be too long for a novella so went with the Red Pony instead.

Jesse day 2

3/6

1. Identify the object that is a pivotal item in one of the stories from Arabian Nights, central to the occupation of Jack in Mary Poppins Returns, and was a love interest of Brick in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
Correct Answer: LAMP
Your Answer: Lamp
Points Assigned: 0
Points Assigned to Private Opp: 0

Anchorman is one of my favorite comedies and Arabian Nights confirmed it with the Genie in the lamp.

2. What 1937 novella begins and ends at a clearing by the Salinas River in California (peaceful at the beginning, tragic at the end)?
Correct Answer: OF MICE AND MEN
Your Answer: Of Mice and Men
Points Assigned: 2
Points Assigned to Private Opp: 2

I read the book and saw the movie. It was the first time I saw Malkovich in a film and I thought he was a brilliant intellectually disabled actor.

3. H. Ross Perot, during his candidacy for U.S. President in 1996, and Jesse Ventura, during his campaign for and election as governor of Minnesota, were members of what political party?
Correct Answer: REFORM
Your Answer: Independence Party
Points Assigned: 1
Points Assigned to Private Opp: 3

I could not pull it. I was pretty sure they weren't Libertarian.

4. The special chili associated with the city of Cincinnati, when served "three-way", typically involves the chili served on spaghetti and topped with grated cheese. "Five-way" includes the addition of kidney beans and what other topping?
Correct Answer: DICED ONIONS
Your Answer: Egg
Points Assigned: 3
Points Assigned to Private Opp: 2

There is an episode of the Omnibus podcast on Cinicinatti Chilli sitting in my podcast queue that I was planning on listening to soon. Not soon enough.

5. What is the common name for members of the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, a movement that is all but extinct today but whose prominent legacy in furniture and handcraft design endures?
Correct Answer: SHAKERS
Your Answer: Shaker
Points Assigned: 2
Points Assigned to Private Opp: 1

I am familiar with Shaker furniture

6. What weasel species, also known as a short-tailed weasel in North America and stoat in Europe, has white winter fur that is highly prized for garments (including, with pearls, by a certain lady/tramp)?
Correct Answer: ERMINE
Your Answer: Mink
Points Assigned: 1
Points Assigned to Private Opp: 1

I was sure I was right. Never heard of Ermine.

Seif Day 2 vs. Mirkin (LLL)

Anywhere from 3 to 5/6, but I think at least 4. Tricky day for me given how much American history or at least American-focused questions there were. Glad to have gotten as many as I did.

I’m feeling good about how I did vs. Mirkin. These questions look like they should be a disaster for him (him not being American), so I’ll tip my hat to him if he pulls off a win or a tie. I see Gideon isn’t in LLL this season (probably because Andy skipping meant there was an odd number), so it’s wide open this season.

1. Genie lamp :/, D21. I really don’t know if this overly specific answer will pay. I had no idea, and I just thought up genie lamp and flying carpet and then picked one.

2. Of Mice and Men :), D13. I remember this from middle school. D3 for Mirkin because he’s about as good at lit as I am at pop music and because this book might not be so widely read in New Zealand schools.

3. Reform :), D01. Gimme.

4. Onions :/, D20. I’m guessing this pays even without the “diced.” I had no idea and just thought about what sounded good. Seems like a very logical guess.

5. Shakers :), D12. Very happy to get this. All but extinct was the key clue here.

6. Mink :(, D32. I doubted this was correct and figured it was likely hard. It was probably a bit risky to assign such high D here.

4. Chalk is an organic variety and oolite a precipitate variety of what type of sedimentary rock, composed mainly of calcium carbonate?
Correct Answer: LIMESTONE
Your Answer: Limestone
Points Assigned: 0
Points Assigned to Private Opp: 1

I guessed right. Was 50/50 on if this was right.

5. What 6th-century bishop of Paris is remembered today in large part via his namesake suburb of western Paris, and more specifically for that community's soccer club, which merged in 1970 with Paris FC to become what is today the most successful club in the French Ligue 1?
Correct Answer: SAINT GERMAIN
Your Answer: (Saint) Germain
Points Assigned: 2
Points Assigned to Private Opp: 1

I knew the soccer club Paris Saint Germain. They make bishops into saints, so that made sense as the answer.

6. What is the current name of the transportation hub located on the site of a former German-American farming community originally named Orchard Place?
Correct Answer: O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (ORD)
Your Answer: O'Hare
Points Assigned: 1
