Dave M day 19 v David S CLL

Jumping online to post today given the matchup v Seif. Just 2/6 for me and a 3-2 loss.

1 : ( Vienna Philharmonic. Was a whole continent off. D31
2 : ( The gods must be crazy. Ah so it was Alien. Great question. D12
3 : ( Sweet Spot. Pocket makes much more sense. D01
4 : ) Balkanization. Finally a question I knew the answer to. D10
5 : ) Mondrian. Those colors are memorable enough for me to get a rare Art W. D22
6 : ( Beast. No idea - a different world. D23

Brian Day 19

 4/6 no chance for more

1) Berlin Philharmonic 3/1  Absolutely no idea

2) Alien 0/3  Great question.   1979 = Alien

3) Pocket 1/2   Another terrific question.   I went through a few dozen football terms before I landed on pocket and knew that had to be it.  Should have come at it from the billiards angle, fewer terms to consider.

4) Balkanization 2/1  gimme

5) Mondrian 1/0   Blue Yellow Red = Mondrian.  I would say a rare art gimme, but I am now somehow 5/6 in my worst category this season.  I was already familiar with his work, plus I was at the MOMA this summer

6) Behre 2/2  I discovered last month that my cousins Behre B and BehreJ are LLamas, so this is a shout out to them since I had no clue.  However, now I now who this random person was in marketing e-mails from Dr. Squatch soap last week.

David S Day 19 vs. Dave M (CLL)

3/6 vs. Dave M. I would have loved more, but frankly I think I’m lucky to have gotten 3.

  1. Boston Pops :(, D33. I was hoping that was the name of the festival in Lennox, MA, but no luck.
  2. Apocalypse Now :(, D11. Nope! I was pretty sure Apocalypse Now was 1979.
  3. Pocket :), D11. Pleasantly surprised to get this. It was the only word I could think of that fit billiards and American football.
  4. Balkanization :), D20. Gimme and only one of the day where I was certain, but I have to admit I thought this was a term developed in the early 1990s.
  5. Mondrian :), D02. Satisfying get in a category where I’m not too great. I was deciding between him and Rothko, but I was honestly thinking the answer might have been someone else entirely.
  6. Capri :(, D22. Absolutely no idea.

Jesse day 18

4/6

1. The dates known forever in Wall Street history as "Black Thursday", "Black Monday", and "Black Tuesday" all occurred on trading days in what month and year?
Correct Answer: OCTOBER 1929
Your Answer: July 1988
Points Assigned: 3

I had no idea what month it was, which crash it was, or what year the 1987 crash took place.

2. What phrase for a small, unpretentious, or out-of-the-way place was a name shared by the English-language versions of the game show, derived from a segment on Japan's The Tunnels' Thanks to Everyone (Tonneruzu no Minasan no Okage deshita), in which contestants must contort their bodies to fit through oddly shaped cutouts in a large moving Styrofoam panel or get swept into a pool of water?
Correct Answer: HOLE IN THE WALL
Your Answer: Hole in the Wall
Points Assigned: 2

I think I watched an episode or two of this.

3. In 1991, a major innovation prize known as the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement was granted for the revolutionary development of what is now a small, white, hollow, pinhole-pierced, ping-pong-ball-like plastic sphere called a widget, to what brewery?
Correct Answer: GUINNESS
Your Answer: Guinness
Points Assigned: 1

Gimmie?

4. The "normal distribution" in statistics that produces the famous bell-shaped curve is strongly associated with what early-19th-century German mathematician, who introduced it as a method for analyzing errors in astronomical observations — so much so that scientists and mathematicians widely refer to the distribution using his name?
Correct Answer: CARL FRIEDRICH GAUSS
Your Answer: Gauss
Points Assigned: 0

I just know this.

5. The massive popularity of Bill Bryson's 1998 book A Walk in the Woods caused a reported 60% surge in attempts in subsequent years to perform what feat (though Bryson and his companion fell far short of it themselves)?
Correct Answer: (THRU-)HIKE THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
Your Answer: Hike the Appalachian trail
Points Assigned: 1

I was pretty sure this was right, but was concerned it was the PCT.

6. Among the shorthand common in esports and competitive online multiplayer culture is the abbreviation "GG". What does this abbreviation stand for?
Correct Answer: GOOD GAME
Your Answer: Good Get
Points Assigned: 2

I should have spent another minute on this. It was very guessable.

Brian Day 18

 5/6

1) October 1929   1/2   Same color commentary as Seif

2) in the sticks 2/2  Easy in retrospect, just couldn't get there

3) Guinness 1/0  I don't like dark beer, but this question just amounted to name a British beer with some unique quality

4) Gauss 0/3    Gimme for math nerds

5) Hike the entire Appalachian trail 2/1  My daughter read it this summer for AP English and complained to me about it

6) good game 3/0  Made more sense than gotta go

David S Day 18

5/6 and could really have gotten all 6.

  1. October 1929 :), D21. Gimme, but I don’t like this question because now Black Monday refers to the 1987 crash.
  2. Hole in the wall :), D12. Very educated guess that seemed to fit the clue. I’ve seen clips of it but didn’t know the name.
  3. Guinness :), D10. Have had plenty of cans with this plastic thing in it.
  4. Gauss :), D33. Math gimme. But high D because this is by far the worst category for both my opponents.
  5. Hiking the entire Appalachian trail :), D01. I’ve read it.
  6. Get going :(, D22. Ah, very gettable.
